RaceFace ISIS Crank...

[Closed] RaceFace ISIS Crank Confusion

OK, I bought a new ISIS bottom bracket and fitted it into my frame this evening. When i've attempted to attach the cranks, the drive side fits perfectly but the opposite side is really loose and wobbly..

Is this by design for RaceFace cranks or do I have a duff crank?

Any advice would be great, hoping to get out on the thing this weekend and i've disposed of my old bottom bracket.

Cheers

Tim

Is it an skf bb?
I had an issue with creaking turbines on an skf bb & suspected one side was slightly loose.
Changed to another make of bb & the creaking stopped.

It's just a relatively cheap octane one BB .. I figured that an ISIS standard should be adhered too, but maybe my RaceFace Ride XC don't follow that standard or something?

Annoying ... What i don't want to do is find some replacement cranks and have the same trouble. Had i have known this be an issue then i'd have sacked the ISIS crap off and upgraded properly

I'd bin isis if I were you. I went back to square taper on my hardtail.

It was supposed to be a budget initial build to get me going and then go from there .. what's that saying? Buy cheap, buy twice? I didn't realise i'd be buying so soon..

Can someone just confirm that it sounds like crank wear rather than the BB? Should both ISIS drive cranks have the same size fittings?

Also, if anyone is selling either a single RaceFace Ride XC non drive or know working ISIS cranks please get in touch ASAP.

Cheers

Tim

I've kept the ISIS cranks I got on a bike back in 03. They work as well as any other. I've got a RF platinum BB with the replaceable bearings.

Re the OP. It might be worth checking the tread depth on the inside of the BB axle. If the crank bolt is too long, it'll run out of thread before the crank is pulled on to the ISIS taper. Check washer stack heights too.

I've got a pair of RF cranks that have good tapers but the rings need replacing if you are stuck.

It's a standard so all should be the same. If the crank fitted the last one but not this one, I'd be speaking to whomever sold the bottom bracket. No reason for thecrank to be worn unless you were riding it loose.

The drive side crank fits both sides fine .. the non drive does look pretty worn to the naked eye, i don't have any calipers on hand to be able to confirm it, but that has to be the only answer.

I'm unsure if this was the case on the old BB as I bought it second hand and stripped the bike before riding it as I knew it needed some work before riding it properly.

The non drive crank just slips straight onto the axle .. it needs to be replaced, i'm sure of that, darn it!

in my experience raceface use a different ISIS bolt thread pitch on the newer stuff. 2010 RF ISIS bolts did not fit my 2000 RF ISIS bb. Ordered some FSA ones and all was good. Not read the whole post but maybe the bolts or not tightening correctly. So RF ISIS bb and non RF isis bolts by any chance?

rnn14 - I looked out that spare set of cranks. they are Race Face Prodigy XCs - 175mm. They are yours for £20 plus postage.

The bolt size is only an issue with the BB itself.

I've tried different bolts and they don't make any difference, i'm sure it's the crank itself.
