Mine should be here Monday 8)
It that it then?
85mm reba's?
100mm Rebas of my old bike (as most of the kit is).
Looks quite steep.
Any ride impressions?
with revs set to 130mm. Not sure I would want to go shorter - it's quick steering! Great fun on woodland singletrack - it put a big smile on my face through the local woods on Friday. Not sure it would shine quite so bright on big/steep rocky descents, though I have yet to try it.
Nice bike PJay - except you seem to have broken the cardinal rule: bar ends on riser bar, dear oh dear!
Is it not quick steering because of your short stem?
I'm afraid I rather lack the finer skills of many on here, I just like riding around rather than high speed skillful techy stuff. I buy a frame I like in a size that suits, stick the saddle and the bars where I want them and off I go, so I'm probably not the best person to judge whether it's too steep etc. The Pipedream site rates the frame for 90mm - 130mm forks so I'd have thought that 100mm would be fine. The forks came straight of an 853 Inbred (as did most of the kit) which was rated for 100-130mm forks. It rides very like the 853 Inbred, I think it's a tad heavier but then a large steel framed bike with solid kit (steel chainrings, robust tyres etc.) isn't going to be light (the Inbred was 29lbs). I like it.
I'm afraid I've never been too concerned about the fashion police, I like bar ends so I pop them on my riser bars (anyway I thought that stubbies on low risers was 'almost' acceptable).
Did anyone weight the frames out of curiosity? I've seen one report that they come in way over the claimed weight but not sure if it's right...
And bar ends on risers, why not, wish I'd had them at the weekend- I ended up doing the end-of-grip-grip thing and really wishing I'd fitted my stubbies.
So far over the last few days I've read 5.7lbs, 5.6lbs, 5lbs and the pipedream site has a pic suggesting the 18" is somewhere between 4.5 and 5lbs
They probably give a weight not including the sliding dropouts on the website.
I don't see a weight on the website but 4lbs-and-a-bit has been the weights they've been throwing around so it seems they've missed that by a huge amount...
the ordinary steel sirius are about 5-5.5lb cant see these being close to that
are these identical geometry to the ordinary steel sirius? if so 100mm is perfect, 130mm works fine but not optimum if you ask me
Mine arrived today, a medium 853 Sirius and it weighs........ 5 1/2 lbs 😯 !
What a liberty, are you going to keep it? Still seems a nice bike but that's really a bit out of order.

OUCH!
So an 853 tubed svelte XC frame weighs the same as an On One 456... 😆
Sorry, not very amusing to be fair...
If it makes you feel any better my 29er Inbred is 5lb 14oz in weight... But it was significantly cheaper, and there's more material on it! 😉
Being serious now, I weighed my 853 Genesis Altitude frame when I got it and found it to be just about 4 1/2lb. Geometry is all but the same as the Cotic Soul, handles superbly and has that magic steel feel. I can ask if my mate who got me mine on the cheap knows if there are any still knocking about that need clearing or not... If you want...
a mate got his the other day. It did feel surprisingly heavy...
I gotta say that's a lovely looking bike (The OPs) What are those silver rims/wheels please? I do like to see a bike with some silver kit on it done properly 🙂
Thanks for the kind comments PP. The rims are Mavic XM719s. When I bought them they didn't do a disc only version in silver (I think they do now) so mine have braking surfaced.
I like silver finishing kit but it's getting harder and harder to find any!
blimey so my cheap old steel sirius is the same weight, blimey..i'd love to do a side by side ride comparison, anyone down south with one?
Is anyone else feeling a little let down with wieght of the frame, dont get get me wrong I think it looks the part but its a bit heavier than I was expecting.
Mine is still waiting to be built up cant make my mind up on fork choice. RS Reba 120mm Maxle light or DT Swiss 130.
I wish I had weighed mine before I built it up now.
And dare I say, isn't the implication of the extra weight that the tubeset is not actually 853.
"And dare I say, isn't the implication of the extra weight that the tubeset is not actually 853."
Either that or terribly designed. Or perhaps massively strong but I gather they didn't put them through the CEN testing?

No not really - I didn't even research the weight and I didn't happen to see one posted on the pipedream website when I was considering buying. I was really only bothered about the geared / ss slidey dropout and geometry capable of 130mm fork.
Regarding how come the 853 frame is the same weight than the outgoing 'normal' steel version, I can think of a couple of ways the 853 may have regained the weight lost by the main 853 tubes thus ending up the same - namely
1) the slidey dropouts (felt a couple of 100 grammes at least *I guess* when I took them out of the packet) and
2) the fatter rear stays compared to the outgoing version
I think it is a bit disingenuous to suggest the frame is not 853 unless you have proof. This is after all someone's business/livelihood you may be slandering...
Having said all that the photo on facebook is a bit misleading if others have weighed theirs at getting on for ~ 1lb more.
I gather they didn't put them through the CEN testing?
wtf?
From their website:
•Reynolds 853 butted main tubes
•Custom 4130 head tube is 20% thicker
•Gusseted TT/HT/DT junction
•Sliding dropouts
•19mm seatstays (previously 16mm)
•Bridgeless chain stays
•2 sets of bottle bosses
•Curved seatstay bridge
I can see five of those bullet points making the frame heavier, and one of them making it lighter, and that's before you even consider CEN testing.
i thought long and hard about getting one of these to replace my old scandal frame, i had emails saying it wod be just over 4lbs from pipedream. Really pleased i did not get one now as very happy with the cheaper (2nd hand)andlighter altitude 30 frame i got instead. The pipe dreams look really nice uilt up but i would have been very upset with it at least 1 lb over claimed weight

From that paragraph alone, I suggest you return the frame for a refund, it is not what you were hoping for.
Over 5lbs for a medium frame (mainly designed for XC) @ £349, not good.
I have to say that when I took my frame out of the box (19.5'') I was surprised by how similar it felt in weight to my Soul but this was before the addition of the dropouts.
Undoubtedly the dropouts make it slightly rearward heavy.
On my basic scales the frame with dropouts weight 5lbs 11oz.
For me though the addition of 853 adds to its riding characteristics - or hopefully will do when its built 😳
Still IMHO its a lot of bike for £305. 😉
For me though the addition of 853 adds to its riding characteristics
not if the dimensions of the tubes are the same as a non 853 model.
in fact it looks like the stays are bigger, you can interpret that whatever way makes you feel good about your purchase.
jealous of what exactly?
ordering a frame from an internet description and being disappointed with the reality?
So is ignorance of the facts letmetalktomark.
🙄
Wider diameter pipe makes it stiffer, irrespective of whether its 4130 or 853. Whether they reduced the wall thickness to give back 'flexibility' or not is anyone's guess, but I'd venture not, given that it would reduce its resistance to dents and similar damage. Ergo, its likely to be harsher than the outgoing model.
Wow wow wow.
Firstly no disappointment on my side.
Secondly

It won't.

pray tell....
Me:"I gather they didn't put them through the CEN testing?"
brant: "wtf?"
Very secondhand this so might not be true but when they were still happilly telling everyone it'd be lighter than a Soul, they also said that because it was a racing frame they wouldn't be CEN testing it. At least one buyer says (and I don't know if it's true of course) that they've claimed that the EN guidelines state that all 853 frames are exempt from CEN because they're automatically considered to be race frames. Which is obviously total s**t of course.
One thing that gives the rumour a bit of weight though is that they say this on their website "This is a specialist frame designed for racing or severe applications"- which seems like it's trying to sneak into the exemption on the EN, "It does not apply to racing bicycles and specialised types of bicycle such as tandems or bicycles designed and equipped for use in severe applications such as sanctioned competition events, stunting, or aerobatic manoeuvres."
I'd noticed that on the website too, and read it the same way. Seems like trying to get around CEN.
