Have been using spd pedals and cleats for the last 6 months.. Had initial sore knee and ankle issues which were fixed with a bike fit and a few tweaks.
Recently saw a deal on shimano spd-sl pedals and cleats. Tried to replicate the position and angles of the new cleats. A few rides later my back / side of my right knee and front outer side of my right ankle is sore. For some reason I also tightened up the spring from its loosest setting during installation.
Any thoughts on adjustments apart from loosen off the pedal spring..
Does tightening it reduce the float or just the ease of release?

Even if you did replicate the position perfectly that might not be the issue. It may be that your foot naturally rotates inwards/outwards during a typical pedal stroke. New cleats require a bit more effort to make em use the position float than worn in ones, and this extra stiffness might be being passed up to your ankle/knee.
