What Steel said.
My road bike has 10 speed cassette with lockring from 9 speed cassette, 10 speed chain, 10 speed rear shifter, 10 speed rear hub, 9 speed rear mech, 3 speed front shifter, double chainset, 3 speed front mech, 8 speed little ring and 9 speed big ring. And an MTB BB. Works fine.

Yeah, but surely the cassette and the shifter will have to match (because the detents in the shifter mech will have to correspond with the distances between the cogs - which are smaller with 9sp than with 8)

yeah dont worry, im just swapping out an old 8spd mech with a newer 9spd mech, shifter/cassette stays the same.
