What are your kids using (successfully)?

1 - Revoshift 7speed

2 - Trigger 9+speed

Upgrading a Carrera Blast 20" and wondering whether to change the Revo to trigger. Only going to be 1x drive.

How about 3 - 9speed rapidfire? That's when my kids swapped away from gripshift to standard rapidfire shifting.

Haha, thought you were raiding the retro-parts bin! As in

'look 'ere kid, this is a proper shifter, friction shift only, indexing is for the unskilled.....!'

Triggers every time. Anything twisty has been thoroughly hated by both mini-listers and me. They just didn't have the wrist and grip strength even in warm, dry conditions to get easy shifting. And that's with regular cleaning and lubing of cables and shifters.

It's the one thing Isla bikes get wrong.

7 speed rapidfire, much better for kids than gripshift IME. My lad's Frog had a gripshift and he never got on with it, only hassle was getting the setup to work for small hands and brake levers but it;s possible.

I need to do the same with my son's hotrock, he's getting blisters from the twist grip.

I was thinking that the tourney integrated brake and gear levers might work well?

I had a 10 speed XTR shifter so i went with that, nice and light shifting, although he does double shift down occasionally.

My lad never got on with gripshift so I fitted these for him, he is more than happy with them.

what I found was that the trigger shifter needed to be quite far inboard of the brake lever to keep it in the right place for small thumbs so I'm not sure if having both controls fixed together would be ideal

Trigger without a doubt.

On another note, a 20" wheeled bike may be on the small side for a 7yr old

I changed my eldest son over to Shimano Altus M310 (seven speed) shifters after he struggled with grip shift on his Hotrock and he is much happier. I have ordered some for my daughters' bike (I'm still in the process of building) - didn't bother getting her to try the grip shift this time - straight in the parts bin!   In my case both bikes are 3x7 and I got a pair of shifters for under £20 on ebay.

depends on the bike, the riding, the 7yr old and the difference between ideal fit and 'good enough for a few more months' 🙂

gripshift on Jr no1's blast was awful while jr no2's riprock was actually very good and worked well.

I'd agree re. trigger being better. I had to faff quite a bit to get the shifting set up so my daughter could shift into 1st when she first got her hotrock. Might have a look into Altus M310 for future.

Trigger, 100%. Can't comment on Revoshift, but we've dumped the SRAM gripshift on every bike the kids have ever had and replaced with triggers.

Combination of wet, muddy hands makes gripshift almost unusable for kids. Still can't understand why they spec it for younger riders.
