Evening! My chains worn down I think as I'm getting chain suck for the first time especially when muddy (which seems to be all the time in Wales!). I appreciate that just changing the chain often won't fix this and that I might need a new cassette and front rings, but I thoguht I may as well try it before spending lots!

Question is, is it worth spending a lot of money on a new chain or would something like a KMC chain do the job just as well? I've got a 9 speed cassette if that makes any difference!

Cheers in advance!

Chain suck is caused by hooked chainwheel teeth no?

Ermmm, not sure to be honest, I'm just going on what I've been told, lol! If theres another possible reason for it, might be worth looking in to before I spend lots of cash on shiny things... Just to clarify, when I pedal the chain gets jammed so I have to back pedal to clear it then carry on, I asume this is chain suck!?

could be a stiff link in the chain. i would spend the money for a good chain eg XT or sram. you maybe lucky & not have to bother with changin the rest of the kit. you can only try. good luck

Clean everything completely and try a new chain first, KMC make good chains and usually the more expensive ones are just shinier and less likely to go rusty if you don't oil them....

If the new chain doesn't work and the teeth on your chain wheel look pointed or hooked then new chainwheels will be needed, look at them all don't forget to see if the rear cassette is ****ed too, cos if everything else is that worn then it's likely.

Swapping to Deore steel chainrings improved things for me on my Inbred. Combined with a lube that does not collect mud...RocknRoll Extreme was pretty good.

Aside that, regular checks to see if chain is worn/stretched and whether chainrings/cassette are getting hooked teeth. Personally I didn't see a advantage by using XT chains: HG73 chains for me...more important to check they're not worn.

Cheers all, will look for a new chain and go from there by the sounds of it.

Was thinking of going for this:

+1 for Shimano steel chainrings, have used these on 2 bikes now and they are very hard wearing...

Also a chain wear tool from Park is well worth having and using.
