so when your chain and cassette get a bit grimy and sticky after half a dozen rides with Squirt or other wax lube (road bike) do you fully degrease and if so how, before reapplying, or just squirt some more one ?

Squirt on squirt Goethe chain. Anything on the cassette or rings comes off with a baby wipe.

I use putoline wax and clean the excess off with baby wipes after the first ride on a newly waxed chain.

Not noticed a problem on the MTB, I assume the mud cleans it off for me ๐Ÿ™‚

Cleaning?

If I had time to clean my bikes I'd be riding more.

I hose the bike down if I have to, wait till it's dry and put more Squirt on, wait till it's dry and ride it again.

I use finish line gold top wax lube on my SS, black gunky stuff builds up on the chain ring and sprocket, when it gets really bad, I scrape the worst off with a flat screw driver - lube the chain and ride. Can't do the same with wet lubes though, sticky as hell.

with all due respect it sounds as though you've put too much on.

Squirt maintenance consists of polishing the chain, brushing the cassette and chainring(s) with a clean toothbrush and then re-applying a drop of Squirt on every roller.

rocketman - aye, you could be right. When I did first applicaton chain, cassette, jockey wheels and rings were squeaky clean and I applied like normal, back rotating the cranks to get a good dose on each roller. then every few rides, maybe 60-100 dry miles i give it a wipe with a clean rag and reapply. Does get a bit of a build up on jockey wheels and cassette eventually though. 5 mins with baby wipes last night took all the crap off though

yup I would say that's the most it ever needs. I use the toothbrush on the jockey wheels as well the drivetrain looks sterile
