I kept telling myself I didn't need them and that they would be uncomfortable and sweaty.
Then tonight I took a spill on to the knee that has had more surgery than Cher and now my thoughts have changed.
Recommendations please, nothing too DH, more to protect the gammy knee... Cheers
Exactly.... Oh and I had have one normal quad and calf and one 'lots of surgery = 7yr old child's' quad, guess I am going to struggle to find anything....
Knee and Shin pads fit better imo, more strapping, more sufface area etc. do make you look as if you're trying too hard though...
Been happy with g-forms for a numbers of years now, stitching starting to tear (well used, so no issue with longevity), so am considering those Dainese Trail skins, look good & lbs have them in stock
I've never worn pads but purchased some Poc Air Vpd knee pads 2 weeks ago and am very impressed.
I plan to wear them for every ride from now on.
A mate has recommended G-Forms, that is what he uses.
I will have a look at the POC's and like the look of the Dianese and a good price too. Need to find a LBS with a good selection I guess.
Tried on some Troy Lee 5450's today, the medium were a tad too large but on the whole they seemed to fit well, anyone got some? Worth a punt?
Ring around your LBSs, see what they have in stock, then go and try some on and buy from them. Fit is vital.
FWIW, I use POC VPD elbow pads and RaceFace 3D0 Ambush knee pads. I know, I know, non-matching brands. So shoot me!
I've got some of those Troy Lee pads, thorpey0. They're good. Once I've got them on and riding, I forget I'm wearing them. Not too sweaty (at least, not till you take them off and realise you have soggy knees). One of mine has a couple of loose threads, but they've taken a couple of light spills and they work a treat. Worth a try, I reckon.
I've got the 5400 which are the ones pictured above without the shin protection and I think they are great. Light, comfy enough to wear all day and protect your knees when you have a spill.
Have a look at TLD's website for sizing, I had to change my first set as they were too small round the thigh.
I'd probably get them again when I'm looking for new ones.
Yeh my LBS where I tried them on is ordering me a pair of small's in, planning on going for them if they fit ok, you never can tell until you have done a good few miles in them I guess.
None matching Knee and Elbow? What a faux pas ๐ฏ
Cheers for the feedback rhayter!
+1 for the 5450s. Been great for me so far and, as has been said, I pretty much forget they're on once I'm riding. Also have left and right written clearly on them which is more useful than you'd think ๐
I sympathise with the predicament also having had issues. Started with Brand X ones from CRC that were ok for pedalling, but twisted round too easily resulting in significant tissue loss, then Bluegrass D30 ones that moved down off the quad/thigh in the crash and needed the gravel flushed out the joint and deep tissue & closing stitches.
I now were Thor knee pads that are solid and don't move despite a couple of offs. Suprising that they are better than you would expect to pedal for a little bit in them but they get put in a pack or strapped to the tube for climbs but the skin on my knee is too thin to take the risk.
I like the idea of packing them or strapping them to the tube for climbs. I have a lump on my patella from surgery and for the sake of 2 mins I guess it would be worthwhile to take them off on long climbs.
+1 for POC VFD 2.0 knee pads.
Great protection and comfortable enough for a day's pedalling
FFS sorry - *wear* not "were".
Has to be raceface ambush, on and off without removing shoes and highly adjustable, have used endura, fox and TLD but these are much more comfortable, fit and forget!
Any positive reviews on the 661 Evo's?
No for me, found them too long and dug into top of my shin.
