Hi all
Looking to put a rear coil shock on a 2018 Specialized Enduro Elite 29er to replace the rockshox monarch that is on there. I already know that I will need to get a bikeyoke adapter to fit a conventional shock mount and a 200x57 shock. My question is if you have done this how did it turn out and how did you get on with the spring rate choice etc?
TIA
Paul
I have a Bikeyoke for sale if interested.
I did it on my 2017 650b enduro. Stuck a Vivid R2C on and it was far better than the Monarch. used the bike yoke adapter and it was perfect.
I think I might have sold Bob the BikeYoke, which also worked great for me.
Never used a coil myself, but my pal had the Ohlins TTX on his E29 and it was amazeballs - just erased bumps and gave grip on par with anything I've ridden.
Very stuck-to-the-ground though, compared to it being quite a poppy bike with air suspension.
@Alanm have mailed you re adapter!
@boardinbob sounds ideal. Have you still got the bike? And what spec.of spring did you go for?
@hopefiendboy bike gone but still have the shock and stick it on my Hightower for uplift days. No idea what the spring rate is but just went for a standard steel spring
I'm very excited interested in this thread too. Not because I give a shit about the finer details of air versus spring or what flattens out the bumps a smidgen better.
I JUST WANT A ****ING SHOCK THAT WORKS AND DOESN'T NEED TO BE REPLACED AT A RATIO OF 3:1 VERSUS ****ING CHAINS AND CASSETTES.
Do you hear me Specialized? My bike is 27 months old. I'm still on the original chain, cassette etc and yet I'm now on my third rear shock.
Can anyone point me in the direction of something that will last longer that a set of brake pads?
@thegeneralist what shocks have failed on you? I've had the original autosag shock replaced with a standard monarch shock but want something that has better small bump sensitivity!
All Monarchs. The first was an autosag I think, and the others standard Monarchs of some description.
The third one failed last month. It did about ten days riding in total from new. It then bottomed out and sagged loads.
Not sure what the repair cost is till I pick it up next week....
Would prefer not to throw good money after bad. Hence advice on what else to get would be good...
Get the bikeyoke adapter and a normal shock of your choice, should stop killing shocks then. Less side load on them.
Give some thought to the spring rate, the Enduro has only a slight progression, it's mostly linear, so it can easily get through its travel.
2017 Enduro 29.
The Rock Shox it came with wasn't terrible but it tended to collapse through its travel when pushing through my feet in corners etc.
It went for a service and was replaced under warranty as it was knackered inside.
I got the Vorsprung Tractive upgrade done on the new shock, it is excellent. Gives a real platform to push against and rebounds beautifully, more control throughout the stroke... recommended.
I was hoping for a month in the Alps last year so having Vorsprung (yes, I'm a fan) Smashpotted the forks I thought I'd go coil on the rear too.
Got an old Pushed DHX, the Push makes it a really great shock.
Stuck it on with a 600LBS spring and it's great, struggles with landings off 6ft plus drops if the landings are a bit flat but outside of that it is excellent.
I'm 200lbs a give it a bit of beans.
Thanks for the input @mbnut you've described the symptoms perfectly!!
Enduro doesn't play nicely with air shocks. The yoke seems to be responsible for it putting additional bending load on the air shaft.
I had an STX Air on my first one, died within a couple of months, faulty air seal. Cane back and within a few weeks had developed a horendous knocking noise, suspect it was the damper head floating on the shaft, sent it back to be rebuilt, came back and problem still persists.
Had specialized swap it out for a TTX, as on a 6.5k bike it should be perfect.
TTX has been on there 18 months with not a single issue. Taken me a while to figure out spring weight, seem to be some oddness when doing back to back testing with different stroke springs. 57mm stroke springs seem to be harsh on the midstroke, yet the 63mm was fine.
Stick a coil on it, you won't regret it. Spesh should of never fitted an air shock (unless it was an x2 or TTX air). They get hung up on weight, rather than focusing on performance.
Sir HC
Many thanks for the info. 600quid is s stack of cash. how did you get hold of Specialized?
Specialized uk no 020 8391 3500
Plush do most of Specialized UKs shock repairs now.
We are running four Ohlins air shocks and one Rockshox on a mixture of 650b and 29 Enduros and haven't had any of the problems described. Saying that we aren't heavy and may have been just lucky.
Saying that we aren’t heavy and may have been just lucky.
I'd say the weight plays a big part, I'm 92kg in riding kit. That's a lot of force going through the shock.
I'm also out on my Enduro every weekend, so will see failures and things wearing out quicker.
Enduro is an Enduro bike, specialized should be designing and fitting components which are up to the job. Surprised they are still messing around with yokes on the stumpy (at least the current one). 2020 Enduro is yokeless... They've also made other changes over the years to beef up the bike.
Having said all that about yokes and eating shocks.... I have a CCDB coil (piggyback version) on my 2017 650 enduro and it’s been thrashed to within and inch of its life in Alps/BPW/wales trails centres.
I’m 120kgs too.
Still on 1st shock with a few services. It’s ace and plush as a plush thing.
Paired up with a lyric coil on the front, it’ll cover any terrain I can handle.
Thanks for all the replies, looks like I have managed to source a bikeyoke and a rear shock so will update my own findings once fitted.
Came across this blog...made for interesting reading...

2016 S-Works here. I must admit that had I realised the leverage ratio of the Enduro's shock I probably wouldn't have opted for one - my STX is already leaking enough air to require a mid ride top up.
Am watching with interest.
I wouldn't bother with the coil fork, air is way more tuneable, both in spring weight (pressure) and ramp up (tokens).
TTX coil climbs better than the stx air, as the lockout and trail functions are firmer.
have recently put a Push 11-6 coil shock on my 2018 enduro to replace the standard monarch, had to use a bikeyoke adapter & the 200x57 shock,
so far been very impressed with how it rides
I had a 2017 Elite and did two Monarchs, went to the STX and didnt have the air loss issue, but did get some odd scoring which got warrantied. Have been issue free with it for 2 years now.
