I bought some putoline based on some reading (mostly on here). During rides the chain is silent so I'm thinking nicely lubed inside. However, between rides the chain gets some surface rust if it's been wet. How do people avoid this? Just dry the chain down/a spot of gt85 on a rag and then wiped down after rides?

Depends on the bike. For the mtbs, aye, I'll just give them a wipe down or maybe a quick spray- I've got an unheated garage, I don't think I'd bother if they were stored somewhere warm. A little bit of surface rust isn't a problem though and usually comes off when I do my infrequent cleans

The commuter's another story, it actually gets a second coat of lubricant- basiclaly the putoline does all the work and the finish line is just keeping off the surface rust.

Basically, it's a downside of chain lube that lasts a long time in bad conditions ๐Ÿ˜†

Ta, mine is just the mtb and it's stored in an unheated garage too. I'll just give it a quick wipe down after rides, the rust usually comes off after a few puddles too ๐Ÿ™‚

It does seem to be good stuff - TJ did mine a year or so ago, the only bummer is dirt does stick to the plates, though if they rust up it doesn't really matter

I'm clearly not getting it hot enough to run off, mine leaves a pretty thick layer of wax on the outside that lasts until the chain gets noisy (after the usual 1 abysmal ride rather than any particular timescale or number of normal rides).

Yeah, I was never sure whether it might be better to have it thicker or really fully melt it... I figure when it's really thin it might penetrate the links better, but when it's thick it leaves more wax. TBH I can't tell any difference in use.

The stars just aligned and meant I had to do all my chains at the same time, what a pain in the balls ๐Ÿ˜†

I usually did mine on the trangia, and it usually takes 2 fills of meths, so its probably not very runny. Might get one of those cheep cartridge gas stoves for the shed.
