well if you have a right leg only or have knackered your right hand XTR crank it's a bargain, £130 for XTR drive side crank and rings.

my entire transmission, cassette, chain, shifters, cables, BB and cranks cost less than that!

Ok, so not cheap, but a bargain for someone maybe?? considered the cost of an XTR crankset these days I thought it was worth a mention!?

because somethigns work better/last longer when covered in mud than others?

if it makes you happy to spend a little on this aspect of your hobby then fair play to you but it doesn't mean those that spend more are wrong either...

I don't think the comparison is apt. My DSLR is about 1000 times better than some clunky old film camera, and I know how to take advantage of the difference. With a bike, my meagre ability could not exploit the slight differences more expensive hardware might provide, and for that matter I actually enjoy the way a hardtail is harder to ride than full suss, as well as its lower maintenance.
