Proper square taper extraction tool?

Daughter has some square taper FSA vero cranks on her tricross. I have 2 generic exraction tools, but the hardened 'top hat' that sits on the BB spindle is too big for the FSA cranks. So when i use the extractors without it, the threaded pin is just driving into the threaded hole in the spindle and not pressing the crank off the spindle.

Anyone got qny suggestions for a better tool that will wirk in this scenario.

Thanks

Ian

A 5p coin or whatever fits to cover the hole?

I have mass of various square taper crank extractors with different size "hats".

One bodge is to use a couple of pennies and drive the pin into them.

Does a 5p piece fit in? I recall using this for something at some point (it's been a while).

I'm not 100% sure but it sounds like you're using a tool designed to worth with Octalink (which have a bigger axle bore, hence the top hat) and square taper in a suboptimal way.

Just get a dedicated square taper one, Park or Icetoolz or something.

Thanks for posting this. I’ve just worked out that my octalink tool is probably the reason I can’t get the crank off my son’s Trek.

Park Tool CCP-22, as seen hanging up in the workshop of pretty much every LBS in the land.

Mine is probably 20 years old if it's a day and now I'm fixing the kids' friends' bikes it's back in regular use.

A 5p piece was quite a lot too big to allow me to use my current tool.

Im almost certain i had a smaller tophat for the tools, but it currently eludes me

A top hat for a Ti axle ISIS BB will do it, or coins if someone doesn't come forward with one rattling around in a toolbox.

Yeah, my Halfords one has interchangeable top hats, the spare one screws into the handle. I thought I'd lost the small one the other week, but my toolbox had caught it.

Drop a countersuncvk bolt in first. Nice kind fit to the bolt hole and doesn't damage anything. You can use any extractor with that. If the bolt jams in first time when it shapes to match the hole just tape the taper and it will pop out.
