A few years ago one Easter a bunch of us set off at crack of dawn from Ambleside, had a big day out and go back mid-afternoon, by then of course the place was HEAVING. We threaded our way through town and overheard a walker say in amazement "Look, they've been...proper mountain biking!"

Nice pics Si, looks like a good day out. ๐Ÿ™‚

mountain, no.

correct, Helvellyn is just a hill. A 930m hill. There is an ice cream van at the top.

sorry you are correct, I was so surprised at someone on this so called mountain bike forum not only riding their bike, but up and around and an actual mountain, that I thought I must had slipped into an alternate universe for a moment where tyres for llandegla\brechfa\glentress\marin trail where just rubber things that kept your bike stuck to the ground as opposed to a fashion item that the singletrack massive had blessed with godlike powers of traction

das "holding his hands up" nut

still, carrying your bike isn't actual mountain biking is it?

Hmm, same route, different conditions. On this day the "hill" felt higher than it's 900+ metres.

This isn't going to descend into one of those 'mountain(hill) -v- trail centre' AKA 'my riding's realer than yours' spats is it?

Hope you had a good day on the 'fell' (nice... neutral word there), pics look good.

how has this got anything to do with trail centre or natural?

trail centre isn't trying to be natural and so it shouldn't - its a different vibe altogether. There aren't that many natural trails with berms or doubles on. Personally I like my riding fun and airborne, and those skills when translated to natural trails give them new life.

each to their own and all that

My "proper" mountain biking from last weekend here in NZ ๐Ÿ˜‰

Ah, Easter riding road trip. The crisp mornings, the mud and the snow on the tops of the hills!

We went to the West Coast and first of all rode the Croesus track.

The full story is over here http://www.mountainbikingnewzealand.co.nz/2009/04/14/mountain-biking-the-croesus-track-easter-09-part-1/

Beer and food at the pub "Formerly the Blackball Hilton", stayed the night and then it was over to Reefton to ride Kirwans

with the full story here http://www.mountainbikingnewzealand.co.nz/2009/04/14/mountain-biking-at-the-kirwans-reward-track/

Then we were off to Westport for a couple of evenings. Tim showed us around some of the historic trails around Denniston on Sunday and then we popped over to Hanmer on Monday and I had a quick blat around the forest before heading home again.

Mmmm 4 days of biking goodness

NZ looks truly fantastic indeed, if only I earned as much as I wished, then I could spend more time riding in parts of the world that look so good.

Local riding? you jammy sod.

Darn, I had just loaded my bike into the van and was about to head south for the sybaritic delights of English mountain biking.

Next thing you'll be telling me you can get gears and suspension on bikes down there.

oh, and there is a pretty low quality video of us riding down Kirwans track over here if you wanna have a look Jontawn. After 1000 vertical meters of climbing singletrack... the downhill is well earned!! http://www.vorb.org.nz/kirwans-reward-t94990.html
