just noticed that there's sllight play in my rear hub. i think its the axle - has anyone else had this? just surprised me a bit to be honest,

nah, the bearings are spot on, not even slightly rough yet
i think its probably cos you bodged the bearings on yourself, plus all that extra beef you carry mate 🙂
it will be the bearings - had it in a front (twice) in a year.
Feel perfectly smooth, but knock slightly.
Is the axle shifting in the frame - I doubt its the axle - take the frehub body off and wiggle the axle and have a look. Bash out the axel one side with a rubber hammer to get the bearing out and then have a look at the axle but I doubt it will be knackered - had 3 rear pro II setups none of which had any probelms withe axels. +1 for bearings or QR or movement in the dropouts?
