My mate who has become obsessed with mountain bikes over the last six months (48yrs old) today described Chris King hubs as pretentious. The noise they make as unnecessary and realy annoying. So beware out there an opiniated newbie is on the trails. Should tell him about this place, I am sure he and some of the regulars here would get on great ๐Ÿ˜‰

My CK hubs hardly make any noise, that's because they're used a lot and and not just kept for posing down the pub ๐Ÿ˜†

I use my ProII's instead of bell when needed.

The Pro II hub on my Orange 5 is like one of those clackety football things. It's great for clearing the trails in front of me, and if there's a bunch of us with Hope hubs, like today. We get a clear run for miles. Pure genius in my humble opinion. 8)

i'm with dibbs.
mine make little noise, being stripped, greased and oiled every couple of months with Finish Line Bearing Grease and Mobil 1 on the ring drive.

King hubs are owed by cocks that have no idea what they're doing.

Afterall who wants a hub that's that well made and has a backup and warranty like King.

My Campag hubs on my road bike are louder than any mtb hub i've ever heard. I need them for the fast pick up you see. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I find my Pro II very good for highlighting when one of our group isn't trying hard enough - make the point of freewheeling when he's puffing!

I'll agree with Stu. I had a front hub second hand, it broke. I sent it off, and no questions asked it was replaced.

Great warranty, fantastic service.

Actually Im starting to get annoyed with my Pro hubs, to me they make too much noise. On the odd occasion its been good to move ramblers, but most of the time they are driving me crazy.

Actualy Ive been disappointed with the quality - they need to be regreased and fiddled with too often compared to the older original ones I used to have.

True, the BULB hubs with the titanium bodies were much better.

Rear hubs:

I've got a 12 yr old deore xt - never serviced, not even dismantled or adjusted the cones (used as my only rear wheel for about 8yr)

a few bulbs & 1 xc between about 5 & 9 yrs - never serviced

(+ 1 xt that I bought about a year ago that went all loose within about 100 miles or less)

Hope BULB hubs. Must be 11 years old. From before there was an agreed standard for rotor fixing (I think the Hope 5 bolt looks better as well). However, I think they may not be on the original bearings. (Hard to tell, I run 4 sets of these!)

Oh dear... and to think I want one of these:

shown here as compared with a Phil Wood hub (which are darn lovely all by themselves!):

All loud hubs are rubbish, especially my Pro II's saying that the Mavic's aren't exactly quiet either.

It's strange when you ride a bike with quiet pickey up bits now

I don't think you lot are typical of King owners though - they're mostly pot-bellied nancyboys on flash novelty bikes who spend more time taking the piss than actually ri ...

If your hubs are noisy, you're not pedalling hard enough. ๐Ÿ™‚

Hope XC wheelset, came on a 2000 marin, rear hub has had new bearings once & the rotor ring(?) replaced by hope FOC. Admittedly they are now on a secondary bike, as I wanted to run a wider rim (and build another bike).
Very unpretentious hubs that do the job, and seem freakily silent compared to my Pro II's

SRAM 9.0SL Front and Rear Hubs with optional disc carrier, still on original bearings and freehub.

Druidh :"any 8 year old hub owners out there ? name and shame your manufacturer ......"

The hubs in my commuter are 17 years old, I think, Shimano Exage. Though they're on about the 4th set of bearings, and the inner races are a wee bit worn so they're not as good as they once were. Still work fine though.
