[#5118133]

I have just picked up a frame from the powder coating in a rush and did not unwrap the whole frame to inspect it at the coaters.

When I got it home I discovered it is badly pitted along the top tube. It looks to me like either the paint has not melted fully or some kind of out gassing has occurred.

Any ideas what may have caused this? I'll give them a bell tomorrow to see what they think but they must have known. There are pits along the whole of the top tube.

Is this what they call an 'orange peel' effect? I'm sure this kind of poor finish has been mentioned on here before somewhere

Underlying surface may have been contaminated
Either way it looks pretty bad ,only way to fix is for it to be stripped and recoated.

Could be a couple of things;

1) inadequate preparation, they left a greasy residue on the top tube before powder was applied and it reacted

2) oven temperature too low, powder didn't melt/flow properly

Take it back and cause hell - it's a crap job and they shouldn't have let it out in that condition.

That's "fish eye" not orange peel..

Caused by contamination on the surface before coating (normally Silicone)

Looks bad enough that it will need doing again, very hard to correct once its happened

Any descent place will accept fault and do it again.

That's pretty shocking really and should have been spotted and done again before you even arrived, even if they had to ring you and tell you there was a delay.

I've had that happen in the past (when I've done it) but never had anything that bad handed to me by a professional !!

Apart from the pitting the finish is very poor, I'd be taking it back

I'm not sure if that is 'fish eye' but in any case I agree that it looks like contamination. Probably from the applicator grabbing it with a greasy hand.

Take it back.

deluded why do you ask if they were Bristol based?

Just had my frame powder coated and although the colour is sensational the finish leaves somewhat to be desired. Its not quite as bad as yours though so for the price I deem it to be acceptable! Amazed that a company would let such a thing leave, surely nobody would be daft enough to accept that!

GolfChick,

I notice in his profile, he's Bristol based. I'm from that way. I recently had my own frame shot blasted and powder coated locally. They (ABC Enamelling) did a fantastic job. Just interested is-al!

I emailed them a pic first thing and no quibbles they said bring it back and they will rework it FOC, they also agreed that the gloss is down and will use a different red.

I am Bristol based but won't name the company as they seem very willing to sort it out. Should never have been given back like that but these things happen sometimes.

I will update you when I get it back.
