How much does it cost nowadays to get a decent finish on a full susser - more than likely black? Also, whats the quailty like having never done this before? Do they do anodized black?

Sorry for the numpty questions, but as Chris Tarrant says - they are only easy if you know the answer 😆

Providing its fully stripped, & ideally given a very light blast to get a good key, it should be good. No idea what it would cost. £40 plus the stripping?
Black anodising likely to be pricey.
We can do matt black at work. But only matt black.

I'll more than likely strip the frame, thought that anodizing may have been a bit above my station! Was hoping for somewhere around the fifty quid mark but being a total novice on this sort of thing wasn't too sure. Should be there or thereabouts then with a bit of luck.

make sure BB threads, all open tube ends and bearing seats are properly masked off. Don't rely on the coater to do it right either, especially if they don't normally do bikes.

The last time I got my full sus done I paid 45 but that included frame, rims and pedals. All shot blasted and powdered.

Be careful as some places use an oven to help loosen the paint before shot blasting and that can have a bad effect on alu frames (I learnt the hard way on that one!)

I got a hardtail stripped & painted for £70 in Edinburgh.
A bit steep it seems...

a giuy in sterling was going to do my frame (sand blasted and powder coated) for £45. i'd not pay more than £50 myself. imo argos etc are over priced (even if they do bike regularly and have more colours - about £90 for a single colour - screw that).

Mmmmm - £70-90 does sound a tad expensive. I can get itdone or fityqud or so I'dbe well chuffed, as long as it was a decent finish 😆

strip it all down to the bare metal that you want painted. i.e take all the bits off. everyhing. Then tell the pwdercoaters that you only want such and such painted. protect threads!

Just picked up my old Kona frame from ABC in Nailsea (nr Bristol)...£40 cash inc shot blast and basic masking ( i always put in some old BB cups).
dearer than it used to be but bombproof finish - ideal for MTB'S

PS, No need to strip it if it's being blasted

Old BB cups a cracking idea! Actually thinking of white now, bit of a tart really! It looks like for fifty quid I'll get the job done 😉

Also looking to get a frame powdercoated. Anyone know where's a good place for getting a look at a physical RAL chart (as opposed to on a monitor)?

Will depend on the colour you want, if they stock it not so bad, if they have to buy a box in you could be looking at over £ 100. We pay a minimum of £ 50 setup charge on what we get coated and I'm ordering £ 1000s of a month. Finish can be a bit patchy, lumps and ornage peel effect depending on the quality of the process.

RAL colours, you need to see and actual sample, even the properly printed charts can be a bit off. Gloss level is also important and can change the colour quite a bit.

iirc isn't powder coating softer than paint?

I always thought paint was more durable than powder coat... anyone care to correct me?

we get frames anodized for £75 and that includes blasting to get the paint off.
Personally i dont like powder coating frames, prefer paint or plating, going to try Xylan coating next it looks awesome.

Crotchrocket, i've had both and the powder coating is much more durable. I know some peeps dont like the "fact" that it is oven baked and could affect the integrity of the frame......allegedly!
Once had a beautiful Argos flamboyant red paint re spray on my old Kona - looked fantastic until i rode it and it ended up with chips everywhere .

Sancho - wtf is Xylan?

30 quid in Brum, all bb and headset races covered, stripped then coated in metallic black. Fantastic job. It's cheaper for none metallics.
