[#11765180]

I’ve had Garmins for years, but have just had an odd sort of issue. Set off on a ride, following a route. Stayed in the route page & directions appeared as per normal. 3/4 of the way round I decided to check the time & while doing this it appeared that my time/distance travelled were zero. Sure enough the Garmin had recorded me starting the ride at home, then a gap until the time I’d changed pages & just records the last 1/4 of the ride.
Is it possible to follow a route without the ride actually starting? So did I forget to press start when navigating the route & is it possible to be following a route without the device recording?
This has never happened to me before but it may not be coincidental that this was my first ride with a refurbished unit (Edge 530)

The unit will "move" the map around regardless of whether you are actually recording. Sounds like you didn't press the start button.

Yes you can follow a route without starting your ride. A common mistake to make, I’ve done it.

I always start my ride then load the route now.

A really annoying feature this. Caught me out before and when showing a mate how to follow a route, it would have caught him out until I told him to check he'd pressed start.

Some Garmins can be set to "always record", so it's worth going through the settings.

You can set it to remind you to hit start when you reach a certain speed. Think the default is a shade under 10km/h. Saved me a couple of times 🙂

Oddly enough, for a day or two my Explore did actually have everything at zero even though it really shouldn’t have been. After a bunch of button bashing and some reboots it went away. Just another Garmin firmware glitch!
