When we left the duke william at about 11:15 last night we passed 6 police cars and a riot van parked on the verge near the entrance to the visitor centre, anyone know what was going on?

Probably, pulled over because they were all pooing bricks knowing they're about to drive through Highly!!! 😀
I didn't ride last night , but was at a VW meet just up the road at The Royal Forester. There were two unmarked, presumbly private cars across the entrance. I wondered if it was anyone riding, but no bike racks to be seen and one was a saloon. There were no rider's cars parked down the lane opposite either. So, who knows ?
Sorry that didn't make much sense, was about 9.45 as I drove past headed home.
