Going to London toward the end of May, and The Expense Twins have booked to go to a matinee show one afternoon. I'm not invited/going, (though I suspect I may be paying) and quite fancy a guided bike ride. I'm not really familiar enough with the place to just hire a Boris Bike and DIY it.

I've been to the usual tourist spots in the past, so can anyone suggest a good company which goes to places that are a bit off the radar. Thanks.

That would be exactly the kind of thing, unfortunately not running the date I'm there, which is Wednesday 27th May.

Have tried Google benp1, but it's nice to get a personal recommendation.

A Fred guided bike tour would be quite something, if I've understood you correctly yunki.

I'm going to suggest Raphas city guides. They've produced a guided tour of the major cities in Europe and clearly London is one.
It's a lovely book, loads of local information, places to stop and see, look at and through tiny buildings for that "view"
I've done it and it was a very pleasant day, took about 5 hrs with lunch stop and took me all over the place.

Only thing is it's a book, a small book mind that fits in your pocket, and no GPX file either.

It's well worth it IMO, but you do have to do all the navigation yourself.

Buy online at Rapha or buy in store in Brewer Street.

HTH

Interesting thread, I didn't realise there where any guides !

Have to say I just tend to explore, find the smaller side roads and link up with the parks take in the major sites. Google Maps on your phone to find your way around. A days Boris Bike hire could work well as you can drop the bike off to do a visit or two (download the app for docking stations etc), first 30 mins of each ride are included and then charged by the half hour after. If you are in the neighbourhood stop off at Soho Bikes for a coffee/chat/browse.

That looks like a good book bikebouy, I might buy one even if I find a guided tour as I like maps and guidebooks. Here's an image.

There are 2 or 3 good London rides in the Lost Lanes book.

It's a lovely book to read, even if you don't go on any of the rides! Descriptions, history, pub and caff stops and a url to the gpx track online.

Very well recommended. I've done 8 or 9 rides from the book and they've all been cracking days out. Not done the London rides yet, but I will before too long.

The Barclays Cycle Hire (soon to be Santander Cycles) app has a list of rides on it too, you can choose from Parks & Canals, Historic Sites or Hidden London.

I've also seen these people around a few times on my visits to London:

I've got a book like that ned that covers the whole of the UK, can't remember the name of it or if it has any central London trips in it, but I'll take a look. Seems like DIY might be the best option, thanks for the app tip crazy legs.

Afternoon,

I use these Tally Ho Cycle Tours! for a little tour practically every year, a little off the beaten track and invariably a pub stop or two.

At one point they were Trip Adviser's second best thing to do in London, although I'm not sure where they are now.
