[#1550487]

opinions please!

My rear Hope pro 2/717 wheel has developed a little bit of play (a bit like as if the cones needed tightening up on my old wheel). Prob about 2-3mm at the rim.

I've had it since september (new) - any ideas on what the remedy is?

Cheers!

J

New bearings, or bearing. Chances are it could be the non driveside bearing only that needs replacing. this one seems to go quite quickly on my bulb hub

Certainly worth taking them apart and having a look then assess bearings then buy some new ones if necc? For ease most c=shops inc CRC do the hope bearing kit for rear for £20 but cheaper are available but I tend to go with hope myself for the extra £10 🙂

Blimey - have to be honest, thought I'd see more than 8 months out of a set of bearings.....

I'm in a similar situation, I've had the wheels a bit under 3 years and have replaced the bearings twice already with a third set looking imminent. I was a bit surprised by how quickly they went compared to the Deore hubs they replaced.

Excellent guide.

Gonna use that on my wheel which also needs doing.

Funnily i think this is excellent value. I can strip and renew my bearings for £10 and have what is basically a new hub. On any of my old shimano hubs i was looking at a new wheel by this time (2yrs) because after 2-3 services the bearing races were always pitted beyond repair

Yep, same here. Bought a Hope Hoop Pro 2 rear about 6 months ago. First set of bearings went after about 100 miles. LBS replaced them and found no grease in the originals (freehub bearings were ok). 6 months of winter riding and they need replacing again along with the outer freehub bearing. I never jet wash my bikes so it can only be bad sealing or crap bearings (or both).

TheLittlestHobo- I sort of agree on the value thing but both times they've been changed it's turned into a bit of a mission because they won't come apart, and the resulting hassle has been annoying.

I do have to stick up for ProII's - Had sets for 3 and 5 years with only one bearing change - No jet washing IMHO!! Fronts still going!!!

Only problem I have had was a hand built wheel spoke pulling out of the hub flange and replaced FOC by hope last year. The bearings however seem not to come with much or any grease so I pull off seals and regrease - seems to be doing the trick so far 🙂

p.s. as an aside, I sent an email to the hope people, and Nick gave me a call this morning to see what they could do. said to post the bearings over to them to have a look, and if they are dodgy, he'd send some more FOC.

Can't fault the service from these guys.

Cool - nice to hear Hope is still giving good CS - Me feels that a popular product always gets a slating from a minority?

Do you not see the irony in this post??

i've got some play in my front wheel. about 2mm of lateral movement at the rim. will this be the bearings as well? Other thing i could think of is something to do with the maxle, but that seems pretty secure to me...

Anyone know of a manual like the one above to help with a front hub service?

James

EDIT: Is riding it in its current state likely to cause damage to anything other than the probably already damaged bearings??

I think you are unlucky - my front needed replacing after 2 years of hard use and the back is still fine. Replacement is cheap and easy - very good video on the Hope website

Edit - the video does not show front hub bearing replacement. Just note that there is a kind of split ring on the outside you have to remove, then use a drift to knock them out through the axle from the opposite side

I should say my front hub has been flawless and is still on its first set of bearings, and when I (rarely) jetwash I'm careful to keep away from hubs and bottom brackets etc.
