Heading out to do Stu_C's suggested route. Meet 11am in Pitlochry, bring an OS if you have one. Post here if you need a lift to see if anyone can offer one.

Currently 5 of us with 2 cars from Edinbraaa.

From car park in town, cross footbridge by Festival Theatre and climb to A9. Cross and head straight on past Middleton of Fonab farm. The climb carries straight on, past a stone circle to reach a brilliant descent into Strathtay (via the golf course...). Head R down the road until you get to a track leading up to Loch Derchulich. Carry on beyond the loch (steep in places) until it heads down (fast!) to Loch Tummel. Turn R and follow the road until you can get across the river by a footbridge (Jubilee Bridge?). Brilliant ST down to the River Garry, then head upstream to the Soldier's Leap in the Pass of Killiecrankie. Find a minor road heading under the A9 and leading to a climb onto Ben Vrackie. Follow this to the Bealach na Searmoin (marked on 1:25000 maps) and then you have 11 minutes to get back to the car via Moulin.

40kms, some brilliant riding. Sorted.[/i]

Couple of big climbs on that bad boy! Somehow harder than they 'look' on the map 🙂 I'll be in Edinburgh as my sister is doing the marathon otherwise I'd have joined you!

Near the finish, after you come down past the Ben Vrackie car park you could turn left and head up the road a bit. When you get to a distillery (Eradour?) you can pick up some nice wee singletrack to descend back to Pitlochry, it's signed for Black Spout waterfall I think.

Evening, reckon I could be tempted to come along. Does anyone have space in their car from Edinburgh?

Looks like a good route and never done any riding out that way.

If I fit the rack to the Uglipla, I can manage 5 riders & bikes. That's me and the first 4 to offer to buy me ice cream at Stewart Tower Dairy.

I'm sure I could sort you out with some petrol cash and an ice-cream, druidh. Do you have room for me even though we haven't met?

I'm hoping for a modest pace, this'll be my first decent length ride of the year so go easy!

Well, you're so far the only one to offer ice cream, so your seat is safe.

So some folks get a pi$$y little crank arm and I get an anvil. You think I've got the force on my side?

Dont even think about singlespeeding it. The climb up from the Tay is huge.

Can I suggest an ammendment to Stuartie's route? As you climb up from the Tay on the estate road, take a right turn staying on the tarmac up through a farm steading then pick up the LRT uphill to the near square plantation (which has since been clear felled)

If you dont fancy the Ben Vrackie climb, also consider the climb up to Craigower and the very fast descent to the Moulin. You can join thefire road up to Craigower by sneaking up the path under the elavated section of the A9

Its a great loop.

Err - do you have some names / GRs for that?

Is that around NN918620?

very fast descent to the Moulin

I lost something there a long, long time ago. Something I'll never get back.

Druidh, I think the farm steading is called Lurgen, the tarmac road leads to it and becomes a LRT on the other side of it.

To pick up the Craigower climb you have to cross the Garry using the green bridge. Its just off my OS map so I cant give you a GR. Ride up to the old A9 turn left towards Killicrankie. After about 800 yards on a bend there is a gate with a signpost on your right. Follow the singletrack up then left when you are under the elavated section of the current A9. The trail takes you under it and after a few steps you land on the fire road that takes you up to Craigower. Its still a fair climb up there but the descent is worth it.

Here's a short write-up from last year (in which I've just spotted a grammatical error - darn!)

Don't even think about singlespeeding

I was swithering about coming but that settles it and singlespeed it is . Not even going to bother gearing down. There is some info about the Craigower stuff in a recent WhatMTB but I think it maybe does it the other way round. Could do descent from Ben Vrackie then climb up from Moulin to the tower and drop down towards Killiecrankie. Where we parking?
