Aaah, didn't realise it was Geoff Beetham!

I was annoyed not to get a timed crack at the Kenda Klimb! I suspect it was mainly teams of 10 riders getting the quickest, certainly the 8 o'clock stint was!

The quickest Kenda Klimb time for the late night session last year (3rd overall quickest) was by a soloist 😉

Agree about the range of abilities of riders. some of the pro riders and top soloists are just superhuman. I was doing my final lap and they were racing against each other unbelievable. all in all a great event really enjoyed it my fifth one I fannied about all weekend wondering whether to swap to my mud tyres but ended up just staying on the summer ones (michelin dryii) what I lost being a bit less confident in the terms on the mud I think I made up on the flatter sections and uphill sections. I agree with the people who say it's not really mountainous but that's not what it's about (so ok its misnamed but so what) there are plenty of tricky technical bits to make sure that there is a bit of a test from most people. my only constructive criticism is to have the cover tent reinstated for the waiting handover area I thought the marshals at the road crossover points were stars did a great job all hours.

With all these photo links cropping up. Isn't there a way some smart fellow can use the face recognition stuff you get with picassa etc so that if you take a pic of your race number on the bike it searches images of the same?

Yep our teams last riders lap is missing. Still doesnt make much difference as he was just tootling round and the extra lap only cost them about 6 places

Really enjoyed the Event this year again - however - i would suggest shorter laps make the team events better. We were riding 2 teams of mixed 5's and with the experience and ebility levels the bets of us only got 3 laps in - I think most of us would prefer more shorter laps. I improved each lap time- but would have liked to at least get 5 or 6 in to really go for it!

I loved it!!!

I haven't read many of the posts above (need to be quick today) but wanted to say how awesome/tiring it was!!!

I was one of the guys who had a big off on that crazy little bump thing on the final downhill, I thought I might have broken my hip in the immediate aftermath but the nice nurse/paramedic man told me to MTFU after checking I was ok 😆

In the end all I needed was a new set of wheels and I was back on the course ready to ride... 😳

Sure that wasn't Tim's 'off' lap 🙂

I got passed by a guy in baggies whilst mincing down the off camber fireroad. Got him back on the climb, but considered giving up the sport at the time 🙂

If you said something like 'nice descending' as you came back past - that was me! - trying to make up for lack of fitness with speed on the downhills...

Hi

I was the unfortunate Salsa rider. Yes, I had a gas canister which I used at the start to re-inflate the tyre after I got back from the run and found it flat. So no, not a schoolboy error. Thanks for just tutting - most supportive. I have regularly lobbed spares to fellow racers who've flatted, even in national races. Sadly I over-inflated it and on the first hard bit of cornering it blew off the rim, showering those unfortunate riders behind me in latex. Apologies and yes, this bit was a schoolboy error. I had a second CO2 cartridge which failed. I then luckily found a track pump on the course and within the tape which was a stroke of luck. My team were wondering what the hell was going on by the time I got back to the changeover about 10mins after they were expecting me...

Can anyone explain the difference between Sport and Open? In a normal XC race sport is the more serious of the two and usually entails one more lap, whereas in the MM results Open appears to be quicker than Sport?

Also, looks like someone can't spell Liam Kileen's name...

Open at Mayhem is for teams that have at least one rider with an Expert or higher racing license. Sport is for teams without such riders.

I agree the sport/open thing isn't clear. Should be open and expert (for those with an expert/elite), how it used to be.

I guess it's to elevate the expert mixed category to a higher status. Maybe Sport should be fun?

I noticed the typo on Liam's name, I also noticed his mental lap times! Never over 45 minutes!

Sarge,
that was me that said that (I think). It seemed to be the way that I passed people on the flats and climbs and got overtaken on the descents. Still, didn't crash so I justify my mincing to myself...

Off the entry form

Sport class - Open to four man and four-woman teams who would normally race in the Sport (or Fun) category of a British NPS race. That means no experts and no semi-pros sneaking in. There are prizes for both the men’s
and women’s teams. Basically a Sports team must be single sex and four strong.

Open Men -Team of four male riders, open to all abilities.

Yes, I didn't do stabilisation in post. Should have. Using a monopod for most of the shots was a mistake too... but the tripod was too much hassle. Lessons learnt for next time.

To save time in post messing around with slow-motion I just rode at half-speed. That worked a treat 🙂

I noticed Matt Barrett in a sport team on the results, he's still an Elite, so I guess they don't police it that carefully, not surprising as it's rather ambiguous.

Matt Barrett was in a Vets team, not Sport.

Edit - Counted for both, so yes, you're right.
