Whatever bulk discount a bike company gets just add up all the separate parts and you will most of the time only be a bit above the new total bike cost. I remember a few years ago that Bikeradar reviewed a high end build Santa Cruz (I think) model actually cost more than building it from parts when they did the adding up.
Not the same at all as building a car or motorbike as there are A LOT more components most of which would hardly ever get ordered to replace the part on a given car whereas a bike is just buying a groupset, wheels and a few bits like seat post stem etc,. which are all readily available and purchased regularly by consumers as separate items,

Aethos is a great looking bike. Round tubes and seatstays in the right place.
Boblo, I am but not working directly with Shimano pricing for a couple of years now. There isn't enough margin in OEM for anyone to get 90% rebates but there may be marketing-style deals done some years to get influential brands onto Shimano over SRAM and VV.

Discs on road bikes looks fine to me now, don't mind bigger cassettes either. Those chonky wireless mechs are an eyesore though.

I've rarely gone beyond 1cm handlebar drop, which with long legs means even the tallest headtubes still require a stack of spacers 😭 I envy the plus-ones of this world, doing a fast bike justice!

The AETHOS is lovely.
But is no different (even in looks! go figure) to the £3,500 Canondale Supersix Evo's of the past. Which were ~6.8kg.
Only thing is the +disc brakes. And +£10,000.
It's hilarious manufactures are touting sub-7kg as some amazing new innovation that 10 grand can buy you, when it was the standard measurement of a 'decent bike' a decade ago. Crazy!
Yes, Flannol this is so true. Exactly none of my old riding buddies have bought into the disc brake 'upgrade' for exactly that reason- they're riding around on pimped 'vintage' rim builds from yesteryear with no intention of changing in a hurry, even though they could purchase whatever they wanted. In fact, they're more likely to source a secondhand top-tier frame off eBay than walk into a shop and drop £10k+ for something no better.
Cannondale could do well to dust off the old frame-moulds of the Supersix Evo from the dark recess of whatever cupboard they left them in and use them to service the growing backlash against overpriced disc enforcement. This was truly one of the all time great frames, and could be offered at a reasonable cost now all the R&D is sunk.
They won't though. Because. Progress....
Both my roadbikes are carbon, q/r, mechanical and rim braked. I see no reason (beyond lust) for changing.
The lightest is 7kg ready to ride and I could easily lose 200g - 300g by getting some more recent wheels.
The other is ~7.5kg and is my do it all and travel bike. Y'know Alps etc.
Both ride lovely and owe me nowt. I'd probly need to spend ~£15k to replace both which would update their obsolescence but for little other benefit.

Years back I had my Fisher CR-7 stolen, obviously a fairly distinctive bike, so trawled around all the lbs's on the off chance somebody had seen it- one of them said that it had been bought in to them to be looked at because 'it wasn't that fast on the road'. The bike shop thought that it was a bit unusual, but hadn't bothered investigating further....
