Fantastic news. We've had top sprinters, track riders and and time-trialists as commentators, and now finally a true King of the Mountains, the Highland Eagle.
So pleased this great person [hopefully] feels OK being back on TV etc...and great to see all the kind words here 🙂
Marcel Kittel winning Stage 6 on a bike. with disk brakes.
Notice how the extra weight is pulling his bike off centre. Shortly after this he rode into a bunch of sponsors and decapitated eight.
Highland Eagle
Glesga Sparrow is nearer the mark.
Nice note from David Millar
as usual, making it about himself.... 🙂
So it's farewell to wee Boaby in a couple of ways...
Sorry, couldn't resist that.
Lol @ spin
Some of our non Scottish friends may not get that
Good news.
🙂
Bit of a hero, like everyone of a certain age it seems.
I still miss David Duffield.
You just don't get the same calibre of utter nonsense these days.
Funnily enough I text my wife last night to tell her, in case she forgot who I was referring to, and as I work in the Gorbals, I started the text with 'Gorbals born' auto correct changed Gorbals to 'got balls' 🙂
Good to hear.
No it wouldn't be a big deal in a perfect society - but I think in the last couple of years we've proved pretty conclusively that we are nowhere near being that.
I still miss David Duffield.

You're not familiar with the work of Carlton Kirby?
No, more of an ITV4 man these days.
How bad is he?
🙂
I loved Duffers.
My extensive knowledge of provincial French architecture is entirely down to him.
Cycling, not so much.
When is she actually going to join the commentary team? not for todays boring flat stage is it?
No, more of an ITV4 man these days.
How bad is he?
He's competent as a commentator, but a bit florid for a lot of people's taste. And then he just goes full Partridge every so often.
He has his share of haters, but I think most see him more like an eccentric but harmless uncle.
Another reinforcement of the notion that being a woman is how you feel/what you like/how you think than it being plain biology...

Your sex is biologically determined, your gender is not. Being male or female is the biological bit. Being a man or a woman is, to use your vocabulary a matter of how you think / feel.
Great news this, it reminds me of Gareth Thomas coming out, it was kind of an open secret but at the right time for them they have gone public. He was a hero then and she is now.
Being a man or a woman is, to use your vocabulary a matter of how you think / feel.
Define man or woman without reference to biology then?
Take it somewhere else please.
Define man or woman without reference to biology then
A man is someone who wishes to be identified as a man. A woman is someone who wishes to be identified as a woman.
Take it somewhere else please.
Nope, this is the right place to challenge and question.
I am pleased that Philippa now feels she lives in a society where she does not have to hide who she is! That she will be presenting and giving good insights is a bonus.
As for any comment about male/female and Biology, that can only be from people that really don't understand Biology!
Better give back my Biology degree then...

It does sound like you weren't paying attention to the difference between sex and gender.
I don't mind Kirby so much, it's Brian Smith's commentary I'm not so keen on. He can't be as uninformed as he appears to be so can only assume he thinks he needs to dumb things down. Either way it's annoying. Eurosport still worth it for the amusement of listening to Sean Kelly.
Shall be checking out ITV4 though. Just annoying I can't live stream it via chromecast from the ITV app.

Gender is a social construct, nothing to do with Biology.
Fair play, he was a great cyclist... They never quite get the hang of hair and make-up though, do they...

It is great, but in a proper society shouldn't really be news...
'ITV4 employs knowledgeable commentator'
Really ? You don't see how this is news ? You don't see this as different from just employing say Greg Lemond ? Really ? You can't see this ?
Course I can. Hence "in a proper society".
Obviously in our society it is noteworthy, just think ideally it wouldn't need to be...
"They never quite get the hang of hair and make-up though, do they... "
Sadly, that applies to quite a few of us cis-women too 🙁
Gender is a social construct, nothing to do with Biology.
That seems to contradict your previous points:

A man is someone who [s]wishes to be identified[/s]identifies themselves as a man. A woman is someone who [s]wishes to be identified[/s] identifies themselves as a woman
Let's give the power to the individual, rather than relying on other people's acceptance and validation..
Anyway, I'm very happy about this development.
Champion road cyclist now has a new career as a sports comentator well done that Man and now a Lady

Eurosport for live, ITV4 for highlights is the winning combination! Sean Kelly, Boardman, but no Jonathan Edwards!
Is Edwards doing it live on ITV4 then?
Loving the ITV4 coverage myself, but I'm a highlights-only man anyway.
Giro wasn't the same without Gary Imlach.
Really ? You don't see how this is news ? You don't see this as different from just employing say Greg Lemond ? Really ? You can't see this ?
If acceptance is to be sought then it has to become less newsworthy, but then I suppose it is pretty hard to introduce someone as former TDF cyclist Philippa York without some form of explanation to clear up the confusion.
It's bloody excellent news that a great athlete is being given the opportunity they have, regardless of who they are or once were
They never quite get the hang of hair and make-up though, do they...
You are right in Sagan's case, although he has two extra weeks to practice now.
Good for Philippa.
why has she changed her surname as well? that's sorta dissing your father and family, no?
Could be married?
Have I woken up in the twilight zone?
No, just 2017 🙂
why has she changed her surname as well? that's sorta dissing your father and family, no?
It's just a name, why would it be dissing your family?
Though it sounds like his relationship with his father and where he grew up wasn't that great.
In the nicest way this shouldnt be noteworthy. However, we are still evidently in a place where transitioning to a different gender still requires extreme bravery and fortitude.
Best wishes to Phillipa York. Can only imagine it's been a long hard journey...
I doubt any of us who aren't in that situation have the faintest idea what they go through. There's a guy at my local Sainsburys (don't worry, I only use it in extreme emergencies) who lives as a woman. A less feminine figure it's hard to imagine. He gets endless stick from young and old. Day in and day out the same crap.
I just can't imagine the strength it takes to go through that each day.
zanelad - (are you in MK Sainsburys) +1
+ Yay Phillipa 🙂
Chapeau Philippa, hopefully what must have been years of anguish are now behind you.
Not MK. Aylesbury.
I can't begin to imagine the guts it takes to go through gender
re-assignment, go public AND start working in the media; print journalism is relatively anonymous - tv isn't.
I hope that she is accepted at face value - an accomplished cyclist with informed insights into race tactics etc - and not just an 'oddity' to be wheeled out for high profile events.
Gender is absolutely irrelevant.
Philippa, i tip my hat to you - Chapeau.
