Previously had a few SLX Chainsets. They always came with washers to put on to the pedal spindle before screwing pedals on to the cranks. I seem to remember they had some kind of warning about the importance of this, but can't remember the details.
Just got a new XT FC-M785 chainset from CRC. No packaging or manuals )+(ie the usual instruction sheet) which is fine, but no washers either. Had a look for the instruction sheet on-line and the current one doesn't actually mention fitting pedals or these washers. Are they needed?
I have two of these chainsets, neither has washers fitted.
Does it not depend on the pedals, as some would appear to have the washer built into the spindle, e.g. XT trails, which stops the axle chewing into the crank arm.
Just wondered why the SLX chainsets came with washers, but the XT ones don't?
I've never had washers on either XT or XTR cranks.
SLX M660 and M665 chainsets did have the washers, but the contemporary XT M770s didn't, neither do the current versions of either. Something to do with the metal thread inserts or lack of them, or different types of metal or something. Anyway, XTs don't need them.
Some background here. That I remember reading when it was posted
I feel old.
