First up is it all clear of fires?
Next the silly idea anyone got a distance for Edale to over cut gate and back to. Edale? Thinking of a train expedition tomorrow
And anyone got a Jacobs ladder loop that takes in the good stuff as a alternative been years since I got up there
Cheers
Tracy is the person the ask.
Not sure about fires up there. Although I know there have been a lot of very small fires popping up all over the place.
The classic Jacobs loop from Edale would be up Chapel Gate, Roych clough, Sth Head down into Hayfield then up Coldwell clough and descent Jacobs. That's not actually that far in mileage, ca. 15 IIRC, but it's a hard 15. Reckon most people would be 2hrs + on that.
If you wanted to do more probably easiest to extend Edale end - e.g. over to Cavedale Castleton side, or Jaggers clough to Hope brink, stuff like that.
Was up at cut gate at weekend again - no fires but v dry - bog of doom was a dust bowl!
Edale to cut gate would probably be around 60 km depending on what route you take with about 1500-1600 km of climbing. If doing Jacobs I'd go up to hollins cross then along rushup edge before roych, etc. I can actually ride up all that, while I'd just be pushing up chapel gate 😂.
ebennett...do you go through a portal into a different world on that ride ?
15-1600km of climbing on a 60 km ride ?
I think I would be off and pushing long before you have described 😉😎😁
Oops, that should have been metres!
No fires on cut gate there was one on the trans pennine trail that was on off for 3-4 days red hot up there though even with the cloud cover so fill up on the fluids
Edale to Langsett and back (depending on the way you go) is around 42 miles and 5,500ish ft of climbing IIRC. I have a route planned to do it the other way but I've not yet managed to be feeling fit enough on a day I have enough time to do it. You could cut a few miles / feet off that if you needed to mind, but it's always going to be a sizeable trek.
Jacobs Ladder via Hollins Cross is about 18 miles I think, and could easily be extended - I'd either go up to Hollins then down past Back Tor farm, up Jaggers Clough and down to Hope via Aston, along to Castleton then up the Broken Road to Rushup then continue the Jacobs loop, OR head over to Cavedale via the Broken Road / Limestone Way if you fancy a challenge!
Options for extending Edale/Roych/JL route:-
Chapel gate has actually got a bit more interesting recently. Not just a (steep) winch, there's a bit of a technical aspect to it now too.
After you come round South Head, cross the road and head up Peep O' Day to Chinley Churn. Head north at the top then fork right on the way down down Foxholes Clough. Comes out just above Hayfield.
Then go up the Snake Path to the shooting cabins on Middlemoor. Head right then drop down to Kinder Resevoir, then straight up the other side across the grassy field (a slog) to Kinderlow End. It then joins into Oaken Clough about halfway up.
Edale to CutGate & back won't be that bad. I usually do it from Hope. I reckon 3hrs-ish from Fairholmes to Langsett & back.
I was up there last Tuesday ( North America then up the side of wall to Mickelden Edge then back towards Langsett). Was absolutely baking hot. Everything is as dry as a bone. No cover from sun and my GPS was reading 99 degrees!!. 66 miles and 4 litres of water wasn't as much fun as I thought it would be!!.
Hi,
A bit of a hijack of a thread.
I'm fairly local - Rotherham - but never done Cut Gate on the mountain bike.
Might use current dry conditions and try to have a go.
What people recommend. Going from Langsett towards Derwent Res, or oposite direction? Which one is better?
Cheers!

Hi Ivan. I'm in Barnsley and ride up there from home via Trans Pennine Trail. If you are going to do it from Langsett end there is a decent size car park at Langsett Barn. Cross the Reservoir and turn up the Bridleway just as the road levels out. You can then climb up to a small gathering of ruins called north America!!. left from there is a good technical climb and following it round fetches you to Mickelden Edge and the Cut Gate path. You can ride over to Derwent side then back. Not that far in miles but a good hard ride especially in the current weather as there is little or no shade up there.
Good call 🙂
Doubling it up, might be best idea.
Cheers teamslug !

my preference is to start at ladybower, on the descent to langsett take the right hand track to north America, loop round and back for Tea and stickies
We rode from Hope to Langsett and back via Cut Gate last Sunday. No fires but very hot and dry. Despite a cafe stop in Langsett and a refill of my water I still felt very thirsty. Take loads of water with you if it’s still hot when you go.
Rode over cutgate yesterday, the climb up from langset was difficult, imagine taking your bike to a kids play centre, empty the sand pit into the ball pool then riding through it!! Coming back over was great tho, North America was sublime!!
Yeah i got from langset to the ladybower inn via Derwent edge and les arcs on less than 500mls, I had a pint of coke there and necked my other bottle then filled them both up - I had decked them both in by the time I got back to the bottom of the cutgate climb so drank from the stream!! Otherwise I’m not sure how I’d have got back over!! So hot
Cheers!
Some good suggestions. Bring on Sunday very early morning 🙂

Rode from the edge of Kinder to North America via Cut Gate then back to Bamford today and it was all glorious. Take lots of water - it's very exposed and very hot, I glugged 2.5l from Fairholmes to just before I got back to the car (there's a tap to fill up round the corner from the cafe if you need it).
I was taking it steady and spending lots of time chatting to people though which was nice. And I saw about 20 people on the top of Cut Gate so I'm not sure about it being quiet 😉
Is Langsett > Fairholmes > Langsett the preferred route? I you can do the North America descent if starting g at Fairholmes too?
It's the same trail both ways, so it doesn't matter which end you start from, you'll ascend and descend every bit of it - cafe both ends too. So it's just whatever's easiest for you to get to - Fairholmes or Langsett.
Thanks for confirming, I guess it’d Be this route then for the food stop halfway.

How'd you get on mikewsmith? or gonna post in the weekend Riding thread?
Decided against it with the heat for this weekend, being limited to the train at the moment meant the Edale start didn't appeal hit the gravel bike up to Tod today, might venture out Hop way tomorrow though
