Looking for some cheapish tyres for a new build and TBH have been quite surprised how prices have risen suddenly. There's some pretty cheap Cinders on CRC. Anyone have any experience / advice. They'll be used as all-rounders.
I found them to be awful, breaking away and clogging with the slightest bit of mud
Grippy on rock and most stuff, not so great in real slop, a bit slow rolling, though everyone's idea of what's a fast-rolling tyre seems to be different - I've seen people say that High Rollers are quick, which is bonkers. I'd say Cinders are quite similar to those in speed terms. But yes, pretty good all round, though not the fastest tyres in the world.
Edit - the 2.25s btw, not used the smaller sizes
Had some 2.1's on a hardtail and whilst the grip was excellent in muddy conditions they were a little draggy and slippy on wet grass (but then aint virtually all tyres). I ditched them as I was constantly pinch flatting when riding rocky places (I had the ones without the anti snake bite bead). I do know however that with the anti snake bite bead and in 2.25 guise that they are very very good as a riding buddy used them for years before Maxxis upped their range.
I had some and they were grippy and tough, but reaaaaaly draaaaaagy and sluggish. I got shot if them fairly swiftly.
I use them as my most-of-the-time tyre.
I find they're good 90% of the time - but every tyre has days they struggle. I have days when the bike wanders on the mud - but then everyone else complains of the same thing. Rarely pinch-flat them but do get occasional thorns.
Thanks for the replies (as always!)
So what would the panel recommend as a good, all-round, non-draggy, hard-pack, cheap tyre?
How about a Rampage? Good in all but gloopy / thick mud and roll quite quickly?

Bonty Jones ACX, but they don't make them any more ๐
I picked up a cheap pair of wire bead ones to replace my High Rollers and found them to feel a bit quicker - there are better tyres I'm sure, but for cheap all rounders, they work for me.
Nobly nics on offer on on ones website. Half price-ish, good volume, grippy and fairly light.

I used the 1.95's for winter trailquest/trail riding and they were great.
I used Cinders for years. I too found them annoyingly draggy, not great at all in mud and after a while the rubber seemed to break down on the sidewalls.
They're okay, but they aren't High Rollers. To be fair to Panaracer, High Rollers aren't the bargain they used to be though.
I've spent years searching for that elusive holy grail of fast rolling, grippy tyres that can be used all year round. I've tried SB8s, various flavours of racy Spesh tyres, Bontrager Joneses and nothing is on a par with my current combo of an Ardent at the back and a High Roller up front. I can quite easily deal with a 30 mile commute on this setup without being a mobile chicane too.
Used them (2.25's) on my inbred a couple of weeks back when I did the gap trail and all sorts of trails around Talybont reservoir.
Gotta say I was really impressed with them, coped well with all types of terrain, rocks, mud, slop, riverbeds etc.
Great tyres.
I found them draggy and could break surprisingly early. Rampage seem to grip on everything and in all conditions tho
