Just need something for securing bike to rack on car, only to be left briefly at motorway services and that sort of thing - to comply with insurance requirements.

Any recommendations where to pick up a cheap, decent-ish lock and chain - of around 80cm to 1m?

Got one from Motor World when I was in a hurry but it's a bit crap.

The best I came up with was my Krytonite chain around the two bikes and rack to make it as awkward as possible to carry, and a normal cable locked between the Kryptonite disc lock and padlocked to the towing eye.

I only ever trusted it for petrol station forecourts, or newsagents etc where I could see the car. A pair of small cutters will get through even a half decent cable lock in less than a minute, stanley knife to cut off the rack straps, and with an accomplice you could jog away with both bikes on the rack quite easily 🙁

BTW - Which insurance companys requirements? I think even the infamous M&S Home Insurance would think twice about paying out for bikes locked outside of the car...

People get caravans (complete with hitchlock and towball) nicked at services, probably second most likely place to lose the bikes after trail centre car parks!

It is M&S actually.

Spoke to them this morning and woman said it's fine so long as bike is locked to car or something solid, this was as I was adding the extra cover away from home though.

As an aside, it only cost £50-odd to add that AND accidental damage. Well worth having I thought considering I take the bikes away with me quite a bit and she said I'd be covered for crash damage.

M&S paid out on my claim for a completely unlocked bike theft from outside of a shop, they really dont seem to care (fortunatley for numpties like myself).
