How difficult is it to change Shimano pads, my front ones seem to have lost power while the rear still works well.

Not at all; remove the wheel, wedge a flathead screwdriver between the old pads and push the pistons all the way back in. Undo the Allen key pin holding the pads in or remove the split pin. Remove pads. Fit new pads and refit pin/split pin.
