Packable waterproof jackets

My Endura MTR Shell jacket has died, before its time in my opinion. Its the perfect jacket, bright colour (pumpkin I think) completely waterpoof, rolls up to fit in a rear jersey pocket, drop tail etc etc. I wear it in the grimmest weather, preferring to layer up rather than wear a heavier duty jacket. The zip has gone and Endura say it can't be repaired. Could try a replacement zipper/slider but I'm not convinced thats the problem, the lower half fails to mesh together but the top half is fine which makes me thing the zip itself is knackered.

Anyway, I can't see to find a packable, brightly coloured alternative until you are nudging £200 plus. Any suggestions welcome. £200 is a lot for something thats going to see lots of mud and the odd thorn. I was looking for something more affordable as I was hoping to get an extra breathable windproof jacket for dry/showery days...I've only ever used a full waterproof on cold days which can get sweaty even with good breathability.

Errol the Taylor will put a new zip on for £15.

Your taylor may have a different name but the principal is the same.

Hmmmm, Endura said that they have to stretch the material to replace the zip and it would destroy the waterproofing. Thanks anyway, might try elsewhere!

Keela Saxon is a fair match to the MTR, cheaper but very well made; properly breathable and waterproof. Keela are based in Glenrothes, repairable there too. They pay living wages to UK workers and manufacture for a good few ski patrols, mountain rescue teams etc. Mine has lasted about five years, so far.. Recommended.

Thanks for the replies...Keela wins it I think for price and also simple washing instructions...the Gore one requires specialist dry cleaning!

However, in frustration I took the jacket for it's third threatening with mole grips. I've snapped a zipper slider before trying to pinch it with pliers, but this time there was nothing to lose. First hard squeeze on the tail and there was a click and visible movement, convinced I had snapped it. But it didn't fall apart in my hands and now seems to be working perfectly! Can't see a crack inside, I suspect it's a two part zip or perhaps the locking function on the hinged toggle had come dislodged. Wierd because it was only the lower half of the zip that was broken so I wasn't convinced the slider was the problem.

Keela is top of the list if it doesn't hold up to the next couple of rides!

Result if that’s fixed it. I’ve got my eye on a Gore paclite gtx as my next jacket for road riding and commuting

Lancashire Sports Repair perhaps. Have the taped seams survived? On my Endura Singletrack jacket (not the MTR) seam taping failed pretty fast and Endura didn’t want to know. Take to dealer - but it was a gift so I couldn’t.

I have an MTR and a Keela Saxon. The Keela fit isn’t great on the bike and I use it for loads of stuff, but not riding.

Recently got a new Endura GV500 jacket, which feels very like the MTR in a good way.

The Keela is a more relaxed fit than the GV500, which I also have. Generally, I prefer the Keela for MTB days and it simply lives in my bag year round. I find that the more relaxed fit is slightly warmer on a cold day than the Endura, both having enough space for moving around.

You might want to read up on Gore's own product descriptions, but Paclite is only intended for 'occasional' use rather than as a full-on day-to-day waterproof. Been pretty disappointed with the last few Paclite jackets I've had - wetting through etc.

Got a Montane running jacket made from Pertex Shield which packs up small and is wearing well/still watertight after 4 years - but not bike specific.

I had the same BS from Endura when the stitching of a pit zip into rhe jacket fell apart (or more over because it wasn't sewn in properly in the 1st place - no needle holes for the length of it).  Utterly shiiiiiite customer service (customer dis-service is better description).

Alpkit fixed it no problem at all for about £15 or £20 quid. They've a couple of proper repairers in their Hathersage shop. You can drop it in if in the area, or sort my email + post it in.  They were excellent.

Going to the original Q.  I got a couple of new jackets from Showers Pass using a ST discount code about a 18 months ago.  One of their lighter oadie ones and a more mtb focused one.  The roadie one will go into a Jersey pocket if needed (and I'm on XL) and is a bit trimmers cut + stretchy material at the sides.  The mtb one is  bulkier. But goes into my camelbak without problem.

Roadie knenis red and black.  Mtb one yellowy-mango.  Both nice and visble.

Really happy with both - I've been out in a monsoon on top of a Derbyshire moor  and stayed dry in the roadie one. No hesitation recommending.

Robertajobb Showers Pass eh? I have their Element jacket and like design and cut, but have been disappointed with the DWR. It wets out fast on sleeves and did from new. I don’t think it’s allowed water in past the membrane, but the DWR needs reapplying often as it can make the inside damp (from sweat I guess). Their DWR seems to wear off real fast. Hence it failing for rst in friction / flexing areas.
I’ve not used it much - just a bit of hiking. No bike use. It’s only washed been once in Techwash.
I am following their recommendation and activating the DWR in the dryer. (Warm - not hot).
Got to say “modern” (non polluting) DWR needs much improvement IMO. A membrane apparently relies on it, so it’s not just cosmetic - the “beading” property.
My Sweet Protection Gore Active bike jacket seems to need DWR re treatment a fair bit less often. I use spray DWR. The wash in product seems far less effective AND it blocks the wicking of lining material. Ruined my Buffalo Tech top despite many many subsequent washes.

My zip repair was short-lived... Ended up buying a Nukeproof waterproof and a separate Nukeproof windproof.

I've worn the windproof 2-3 times a week since, waterproof only 3 times for proper wet rides.

Less sweaty in the windproof and it's shower proof, and as I'm not wearing it so much in hoping the waterproof will last much longer 🙂

Both fit in a jersey pocket too
