[#1842368]

Last night I went out and made some pretty daft errors on the bike, I just couldn't seem to ride properly. Over the bars I went (twice), chose the wrong line at every opportunity, clipped trees with my shoulder, rode into my mates - basically I was a danger area.

Anyway, coming down a pretty fast road section, turning a blind right hander, I was leaning in when a car came up the other way about a foot over my side of the road. (I was middle/left of my lane so leaning just about over middle of my side.) I just touched my brake and pretty much instantly lost the back end, went straight into a slide on my knee, then a roll over the bike (leaving a bloody smear on the crossbar on the way), smacked into the kerb and rolled down banking into nettles. I'd travelled about 10yds on the tarmac then 3 or 4 down into the nettles, all at about 25mph.

Luckily, my mates weren't far behind, to initially make sure I was ok, then laugh, then describe what they saw. Whoever the big group was coming up the hill the other way (who saw it all), thanks for stopping and making sure I was alright - it was much appreciated. I was a bit shaken when you saw me!

The damage this morning - bruising coming up where there aren't grazes, bloodied bits nicely stinging in chorus with the nettles, brake lever bent (though from a previous endo), shoes damaged from the tarmac (melted, incidentally!), wrist, ankle and arms aching like mad and a sore neck.

The moral of the story? If you're not riding well early in a ride, take it steady later on.

Still a cracking ride though
🙂

I assume you made it down from crosspool without injury?

Are you ok for Saturday Chris?

The car- do you feel it was your speed or a combo of car and you? Were you hi-sided? If you were your lucky!

The car didn't stop, no.

I can't take pictures as I'm at work, but someone in the other group said "Are you Pook?", so there were witnesses! 🙂

edit: Hora, from what I can work out it was a combination of speed, new pads on the rear biting earlier than i expected, the car being over my side, and the corner being slightly off camber. I wasn't hit, the back end just washed out.
There's a lovely gouge in the tarmac though from some as yet undiscovered metallic bit on my bike....

Gouge is a bit over doing it, it was a scrape.

on the hill there isn't really anywhere for a car to safely stop and with the mass of cyclists that were around, they probably thought you were well catered for.

Was this that bit of road which is a huge waste of 'vert' after you've climbed back out of wyming brook?

I saw the fall as I was coming up the hill - I was very surprised you didn't come off much worse.

The car in question was overtaking one of our group but it would have been courteous of him to at least stop.

It looked quite impressive as we were coming up the hill, you did pretty well to get off that lightly though it did look like you had a big dent in your knee.

I was just commenting to one of our group that last time we cycled up this hill we saw a roadie over cook it and end up in the hedge, then heard the skid and saw you end up in the same bit of greenery!

Had a good ride but to much post ride beer last night,

Gareth

Oil on road?

In Snowdon the other week a motorbiker slowed me down - turns out his mate had driven straight into a deep hedge on the twisties 😆
