But the 04 enduro was not a patch on the 05/06 version. Completely different bike. The 04 was more what the stumpjumper is now.

Agree tho the 05/06 version is awesome & spesh have never really replicated it. My 800 steel spring probably adds a couple of pounds on the DHX air. It's incredibly plush though.

Im 6,2" and ride an 18" alpine and find it perfect,it flies up hills(better than my 08 5 spot) and is way better on the downs. It weighs around 34lb with coil shock and 36vans but feels loads lighter and more lively than the weight would suggest. It keeps its speed better on the flat than the 5 spot too,the 5 spot was approx 29lb.I weigh close to 15 1/2 st kitted up and use the standard 450lb spring,i bought a 550lb as suggested but find it way to stiff.

I've been very impressed with my Alpine 160 this summer. Very confident on the descents, maybe not the sharpest in tight singletrack, but plenty sharp enough. Lots of fun.

The biggest surprise though is how well it climbs. It pedals very, very well. Better, I think, than the Heckler it replaced.

Only thing I'd say is that, as mentioned above, the spring recommendations seem very stiff. I'm still on the standard 450lb one (I'm 14st) but planning on getting a softer one.

Couldn't tell you exactly what mine weighs, but it's built up with coil shock and fork (Lyrik) plus Maxxis 2.5" UST DH tyres and, while you'd never call it light, it's lighter than it looks and fine to pedal all day.

I got an Alpine 160, its mint, pedals very well much better than the reign x it replaced and it rips on the downhill. It is defo built stronger than the 5 but I have seen Ben Cathro rip a five down Innerleithan. I know your carrying a bit of heft but he is a nut case and pins it and he hasnt snapped it!! However, if the alpine (Its got slack angles etc) is not up your street why not ask Orange to stick a coil shock on it?

According to Weight Weenies the 05/06 Enduro SX* weighs 3.5kg with an RP23 now you have a big old coil shock and that will add another 3-500g so you are looking at the best part of 4kg for your current frame.

*The SX is just a normal Enduro frame with a small shock and less travel so if anything it will be a fair site lighter than your large Enduro.

The Original Giant Trance weighed 7.5lb and that was a 100mm XC frame!

3.5 - 4.0 KG for a 150mm heavy duty frame is pretty good. My 06 Enduro had a DHX coil on it, with a Ti spring. There was nothing in it weight wise with the air shock, but performance was much improved.

The Alpine looks tremendous, and I'd love a go on one to see how it compares to my 5.

This is the perfect excuse to get a 5 with CCDB shock. Light and strong enough to hold the fattest of bastards.

I am at the other end of the scales at 11 stone and ride a 16" Alpine. The bike weighs bang on 32lbs all 09 stock kit and with rp23 and Fox 36R forks. One could easily lose some weight by changing the Crankset and the heavy downhill stem and bars and some Stans Flow wheels. Why bother unless you have cash to flash! It is a fantastic bike for big trail centres and big days in the mountains. Pedals uphill better than my old yeti asr!and you don't need to be told how good it is at coming back down. The most planted big trail bike out there in my opinion.
