I currently have a 2005 specialized enduro expert with a Fox DHX5.0 coil shock upgrade. Awesome bike but even with mostly hope, thomson XT & XTR kit weighs in at 36.5lbs.
I'm looking for a new frame and as my riding has changed from FR to "trail & all mountain" I had thought of the orange 5. I've checked with mojo and at my 20.5 stone, the 5's RP23 shock is overloaded.
I'm now considering the Alpine 160 as the longer shock stroke means that it will withstand my
weight.
What are your views on these?and could I build one up to 30lbs? My LBS have told me that the weight difference
between the 5 frame and the Alpine frame is 3.0kg vs 3.2kg which is less than half a pound. Can anyone confirm if this is true?
Finally, do they peddle as good as the 5?
Thanks all!
Bosh.
A sensible build for what you want it for will take you closer to the 34lb mark.
To get it to 30lb or less will take a lot of money and sacrifice what the alpine was aimed towards.
The only difference on the standard 5 and the alpine is the swing arm?
The reason I asked is that the MBR tested stock version came in at 31.8lbs and that was not particularly high specced.

[/img]My 160 is the A.M. version, with the DHX5 air shock and hope brakes. It weighs in at 33.8 lbs running dual ply maxix minnions, so its no xc-leightweight but yet is more than capable of "everyday / xc" riding, plus is perfect for big days out / alps etc....
Ive owned / ridden loads of bikes over the years, and this is by far and away the best allrounder for my type of riding.
I tried the five, loved it, but loved the 160 even more. Horses for courses.
37lb with coil shock and van forx - weighed at orange - big kaiser continental tyres - MTFU - get involved.....
Harsh, yet true...
Mine is 18" DHX Coil, 36 Vans, Single Ply Minions, SLX Double chain set, Thomson stem and post, Juicy 5s, weighs in at 33.8lbs. Ride really well.
I reckon you could loose a 1.5LBS switching to air, tyres arent the lighest either, nor are brakes so i think 31lbs is do able. But then youd have to have air shocks, the coils are just so so much nicer, esp with a custom tune.
I think we may all be pissed.....
How does your pimped bike weigh so much? My 05 large stock enduro expert with 5th element weighed about 33 pounds...I was about 13 stone when I had it, and it was fine for everything bar xc racing.
If you are really 20 1/2 stone I suggest you replace some of that weight with manliness you big soft shite.
**** off you ****
I think we may all be pissed.....
BUT, I'm 15 odd stone. I would like a bike that I could get ragging on uplifts, normal trails and mebbe some trail centres!!!
OK for a mini DH bike?
"* off you * "
Who's talking to me? It's not a 20&1/2 stone bloater crying about trying to lose a few pounds off his bike is it?
Or am I being talked up to at all? I'm man enough to ride a 33-34 pound bike, like a man. I'm not concerned by such insults, should they be directed my way.
Come dance mother****er - i speak truth - ****
Lick my balls...actually, I should ask if I know you before I instruct you to lick my balls. Do I know you?
I've seen the bike on the scales - I don't think you know me - and I would tear your gonads off - let's meet...
As long as your not 'Ton', cause that guy's a unit....
"I don't think you know me - and I would tear your gonads off with my teeth - let's meet... "
You sound like Lanesra. The Mod decided to ban him for pretending to arrange a fight. You are pretending, aren't you? You don't really want to place my succulent balls one by one in your mouth and bite them off and swallow...do you?
Or maybe you are serious. Ok then, Newington Green at dawn.
No worries compadre - all wind and piss - I'm just sure whatta I were sayin' like was bonafide - greenhead park at dusk, naked and oiled - turkish style 😀
It appears I have been an outstanding tit - apologies to anyone disgruntled
Feel free to laugh at me going t'over t'bars....
Call it my penance....
Bosh When I was at Orange Three weeks back I did ask
how comes the differance in weight between the two frames.
It turns out that the Alpine has the rear swing arm of the 224
The parts of the swing arm are the shock mount and rear part of
the swing arm.
My advice would be to ask MOJO if they can put the correct
Booster valve in to your weight on the RP23 if that would help.
Thats if you bought the 5
Or ask them what if you put the DHX5 rear shock on
I think the lightest you get the Alpine 160 down will be 32lbs
for a medium frame build, and thats going to cost.
Its a shame they did not put the Patriot rear swing arm on the
Alpine 160 be a very good weight bike.
Find something better. Its a bloody awful looking bike. Like most Oranges...
...in fact all of them.
The Alpine is the perfect bike for me. It flies both up and downhill, and is shed loads of fun in freeride parks. My main reservation on buying this bike was whether it would climb well and if it would be too weighty for all day riding. Tbh I never use my hardtail now as my Alpine is a joy to ride for two to three day camping jaunts in the Beacons and Black Mountains, trail centre blasts and uplift days. There are lighter bikes out there and the slacker angles do mean you have to shift weight over the front on the steeper/rocky/rooty climbs. This does not seem to make a difference to the speed I get up the hills though, and is amply rewarded by the downhill sections.
No idea what the precise weight is but I'm 12stone and a bit (numbers aren't my game!) and I'm man enough for it. There really is nothing not to like about this bike unless you have ambitions for XC-whippet status.
that 160 is a serious lookin piece of kit, I'd love one, 32lbs is about the perfect weight for a bike imho.
oh and SDP, you should add some fringed tassels to those knee pads cow girl 😀
simple dumb pilot just watched your video, how can you say mtfu when you ride like a pansy. what a waste of a bike
Just buy one, stick a DHX air (or coil) on it and don't worry about a few pounds here and there. Those that bang on about 1 or 2 extra pounds are full of ***p, a 35lb is not too heavy for all day rides. 1lb is roughly 500grams just take a dump before you go riding, put less stuff in your back pack, man up and build some strength in your legs, and don't put as much junk in the trunk (loose weight).
There are other options though.
Lappeire Spicy
Yeti 575
Intense 5.5
Knolly deliruim
Gaint Reign
trek remedy
etc etc
The orange frame could shed a fair bit of weight, the rear swing arm looks a bit like a something I'd expect to see on an appollo. having said that I had a 224 and loved it.
At the end of the day orange bikes aren't the best lookers at the party but they sure are fun fun fun, and thats what matters 😆
You can get a 160 below 30lbs but to do so you can't weight 20+stone, you need to weigh in at about 12stone.
hmmm
32lbs is about the perfect weight for a bike imho. (I weigh 77kg)

now there's gotta be a formula in there somewhere!?
I reckon 32-33lbs is fine for general riding, wouldn't particularly like a bike any heavier than that but I'm sure it's doable.
Seems like with the Alpine you would have to weeny it up too much to get it to 30lbs which misses the point of the bike.
If you can get the Alpine down to 30 lbs please let me know
how to get my Orange 08 5 AM down to 25.5 lbs 🙂
The only real difference I felt when I went from a 34lb reign to a 27-28lb epiphany was that the lighter bike sprinted better. The down side was that the lighter bike then didn’t feel as sure footed on the descents.
So it’s a compromise between what you want most out of it?
I personally think a lot of this getting a bike to almost super lightweight is more about impressing others than actual enhancing ride quality.
I love it when people post on here pissed.
It's not essential to get the build down to 30lbs as one of my feet weigh more! I was simply curious as the MBR review stated under 32lbs with bashguard etc. Simply going to transfer the kit from my current enduro.
The five suits my riding style better but the concern is that I'll break the shock or frame. If my bike shop are correct and there is only 1/2 of a pound difference then the alpine is a viable option.
If it was going to come in at 36+ then I may as well just keep the enduro!
The enduro is just that bit too heavy for all day riding. (and 5 years old so I'm looking for an excuse) Tbh the alpine looks just the ticket for me. Watch this space.
how to get my Orange 08 5 AM down to 25.5 lbs
Why? It will ride horribly and completely miss the point of the bike surely?
Grumm just a joke mate 😉
Bosh.
Bike weights in magazines are very often wrong ..
"If it was going to come in at 36+ then I may as well just keep the enduro!"
cos its a new bike innit..lol
The goal for me is simply to have a cracking trail bike, fun on the downs that is light enough for me to ride all day and will not snap with my weight.
My current enduro ticks all boxes apart from being too heavy for all day riding.
have you looked at other options, whats your budget? I'm even heavier then you and I buy nicolai. what spring do you run on your enduro. and for your weight do not buy an air shock, or coil forks
My mate has an Alpine 160 - RP23 and vans up front nothing lightweight on it apart from the tyres (Big earl and mountain king). His comes in at 32.5lbs, I borrowed it for a few weeks when he was on holiday and was instantly won over. It climbs better than my meta5 and is superb going downhill, as others have said unless you are doing XC whippet racing then it really is one of the best all round bikes out there.
How about a Ibis Mojo, cracking bike up and down hill and plenty of yanks riding them at your weight and above. Mines about 30lb with coil pikes (soon to be Lyrik solo air) and D321 wheels (not light but very strong). I'm 100kg.
That Enduro is lovely - those are the best looking year Enduros I reckon.
Have you ever thought about a Pitch btw? Stock weight is meant to be around 30.6lbs, and rides similar to an Enduro.
Yer best Enduro they made and still used as an example of a good bike.
A friend of mine some how bought a new 06 model that was out the back
of a shop minus the shock for around £ 250 quid. Loves it but all day trail riding finds the 33 lbs hard to lug around compare to his
04 Enduro weighing in at 28lbs.
I had an S-Works Enduro
32.5lbs for a large running lightweight 2.4's tubeless on 5.1's, air talas, full xtr... with my current brakes, rotors, I-beam etc I could probably knock the 1/2 lb off - but I gave up trying to loose bike weight, and concentrated of getting fitter 😆
Been thinking of a 160 myself, just been looking at them this weekend. At 6'2" do you think I could get away with an 18" frame though? I used to have a Patriot which was superb (also a big lad!) but just a touch heavy for lugging up High Street, and a bit gate like at 20" (something a bit smaller would have just been a bit more manoeuvrable).
I am basically looking for a nice all day trail bike for a manly kind of man 😉 (Not quite the same weight as the OP, though I was a few years back, closer to 19 stone at the moment, and trying to shift another couple!). Local trails being the Lake District means I can justify something a tad burlier than my current 575.
