Bit of random musing. I've bought a EDC tap and top cap on a whim so I can have one tool on multiple bikes but have discovered the steerer on one my forks is an touch over the max size 🙄. I'm probably going to try and tap the steerer anyway to see how deep the threads are however not convinced they will be deep enough to preload the headset (maybe enough to hold the tool in though).

The stem option is not ideal, one for the eye watering cost and two because the limited sizes don't match what I want to run (31.8, 70mm).

I don't really want to run the pump as my current pump is fine. I'd also prefer the in your face hole as a reminder to grab the tool.

This leaves me wondering about other solutions. So far come up with using a problem solvers micro adjust spacer to take care of preload. Then either use the not full depth threads to hold the tool top cap, a short bit of thicker steerer in top of the stem (or a offcut of the forks actual steerer with top cap bonded in) or bond top cap to top of stem.

The tool is retained by the o-ring on the tool against the screw in top cap.

It might be possible to preload the stem with threaded bar and a couple of nuts and washers.

Then, if the cap can screw in with a bit of PTFE tap or similar, then the tool will locate against that.

Hmm, good idea. Could preload using a hope head doctor (or similar) as well, then remove. So down to if there is enough material to thread enough to hold the top cap in. After preload it sounds like there is no load on the threads?

Even with preload, there's not much load on the threads. Preload should only be a couple of Nm anyway.

Just remember that if you use a Head doctor/bar and washers, you're a bit buggered if you need to preload on the trail. I crash a lot, and when I do, I quite often twist the stem. If you then have to realign it by undoing the bolts, you're then pretty stuffed if you haven't got a way of preloading.

Yeah I think if it worked then I'd look to get the problem solvers adjuster for that reason.

Pro Tharsis stems have a threaded collar on the bottom, but they aren't particularly cheap either

Interesting stem, not seen those before. Has the right clamp size as well. Cheap in 35mm length.
