29ers, mtb drop bars, disk brakes improved it recently.
Single speed upped the enjoyment several notches but that happened a long time ago.
A year ago, I'd not long moved from a 10 year old V-braked Marin with a crap fork to a Rockhopper. This last year has been a rollercoaster of new things to try including night and snow riding, big disk brakes, a carbon framed full susser, the brain shock, mountain bike racing, building my own 456 and the fun that comes with riding a steel-framed, long-throw hardtail.
But the one thing that's really opened my eyes is the difference a top-drawer rear mech and cassette makes.
Riding with guys that want to ride even more than me.

the only thing to have any major impact on my enjoyment of riding in the past 20yrs was the 10+yrs of DH racing I did, it made me realise that ride quality is way better than quantity/frequency and that other than tyres, parts make very little difference.
So many things in the time I've been riding.
In time order, suspension fork, Disc brakes, decent lights, FS, Tubeless, QR15, most recent my new Joplin seatpost, long live progress ๐
My maxlight xc pro2 bike...pentlands and local trails are no fun on a 5 or spicy!
Putting a Super Tacky High Roller on the front has given me so much more confidence in the turns - which has made me nearly able to keep up with my friends in the twisty bits!
Oh and an Alfine hub has got rid of the winter skipping gears/chainsuck misery, which would often make me grumpy.
Steel hardtail (frame) ๐
Waterproof shorts & sox - makes riding soooo much more comfortable ๐
y Enduro SL in it's entirety. Such a good bike, 28lbs all in with 6" of travel front and rear, it's everything I wanted in a full-suspension ride (and it has an adjustable seatpost as well )
i agree! i've just bought one with the original intention of using for alps duties and selling it after. I'm that impressed with it i'm selling my beloved superlight i've had for 2.5 years. The enduro does everything better than than the superlight.
changed enjoyment of riding: tubeless without a doubt
same as woodsman.
Love my 853 rock lobster.
chucking my old Alu frames in the skip was one of the best things I ever did.
LED Lights. I probably do more riding in the dark than in the light at this time of year.
Brakes and forks that work. The rest is just comment.
For me - BMX and some coaching on core skills!
winter boots.
bike fit for the roadie.
riding more has been the biggest change I think.
Because I'm fitter I enjoy the time I do ride far more - the climbs are easier and I have some breath left over for the bits that go down as well.

one thing ?
flats and coaching ๐
I am really going to regret this an lose all forum cred - but I am going to say it anyway - BAR ENDS. You don't walk with your knuckles facing forward, why would you ride like that for hours on end? And the whole riser and bar ends thing - I know it don't look right but they do different jobs OK - and you can't get really wide flat bars....anybody else want to join my crusade, can I come out in public again?

pnuematic tyre.
Doggers?
reliable components
my van.
Bell. It works with walkers etc.
You don't walk with your knuckles facing forward, why would you ride like that for hours on end?
You don't have to steer when you're walking. What a silly comparison.
my Airnimal. Got me back and riding daily again for the 1st time in 10 years.
if we're talking more of a component then I'd go for either Garmin 705 or Exposure Maxx-D. The former 'cause it appeals to the inner geek and works with my competitive streak to help me get fitter, the latter because it meant that I could ride in the winter...

which way are they facing with bar ends then ??
Merino tops & riding buddies ๐
and you can't get really wide flat bars
๐ WAKE UP GRANDAD!! ๐
Road - clipless pedals, bib shorts, indexed gears, ergo/sti levers, Windtex fabric, Neoprene overshoes,
MTB - disk brakes, suspension,
Assos chamois cream, Gortex
Where do you get merino riding buddies from?
I hadn't realised the uniqueness of "one" had been devalued ๐
riding with new riding buddies.
and my blue pig.
ragley blue pig
29ers and SS, more often than not, together.
oh, and bib longs which don't give me a wedgie. soo much more comfortable!
another pair of Time Atacs, three bikes + two pairs = pain in the arse
After this Christmas, proper clothing - Gore windstopper bib longs (my present to me) and an Alp - X jacket (from my partner - to be fair I bought her one as well!) in a fetching shade of green.
Combined with Sealskins socks I am now considering changing my user name to Toasty McToast.
No idea why I suffered with the cold and wet for so long - blind stupidity and a belief that suffering on the bike during winter was normal and that everyone else felt the same and just put up with it.
Sfb I don't think we need to worry too much about numbers of components specified. Knock yourself out, tell us more of yours.
