So,

It's my birthday Monday and I need new riding shoes, and I've settled on these two:

Impacts (black):

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/five-ten-impact-2-low-mtb-shoes/rp-prod108770

Or

Elements:

I'm swaying towards the Impacts as they look a bit sturdier.

Any opinions would be great,

Cheers

I have both. Impacts always win.

Both are great.....but the impacts are warmer and better fitting.

Elements would be best for long hot dry days - of course we don't have many of these.....

I bought some of those freeriders pre xmas on a Psa for £36!
Not ridden in them yet (waiting for summer!), but they feel nice on, mooching round the house!
I think the only problem might be no lace keeper.
Enjoy your deliberations!

Edit...not the elements version!

£36? For real, wow!!

Think I've decided on the Impacts. Hoping to get a decent contribution with birthday CRC vouchers so hopefully I won't have to put too much towards them.

This will be my first pair of Five Tens so looking forward to getting a pair!

I wish they'd employ someone who can style decent-looking shoes that are functional, instead of some teenage lad, seemingly coked off his face

(I still have some of the original impact low shoes - kack styling, disposable cardboard inners, uppers that are so absorbent that they weigh about 2 stone each when wet, never dry out and smell like death itself. Brilliant soles, though 😕 )

It being STW, I'll recommend something different. The Impact has a really good sole but isn't that well made a shoe, it's clumpy and soaks up water like you wouldn't believe, just plain bad in winter. Mine fell apart after under a year, wasn't happy, they had the build quality of a tesco trainer. But really nice to ride in.

The new VXI models are much better made, but have a terrible sole- grippy, of course, but no feel at all from the pedals. Not everyone is bothered by this of course but, well, they can't get Sam Hill to wear the Sam Hill Signature model which is pretty embarassing... I hated mine, they were like foot anaesthetic. A damn shame, they got everything else right. Also the Freerider has a completely smooth bit under the ball of the foot which is obviously exactly what you want if you're ever walking in mud...

So- I got the old Freerider Elements, not the VXI

Has the old-style sole so far more feel, but is a bit better made than the Impact and also has basic waterproofing and doesn't soak up water like the impact does. Brilliant kit. Not perfect but very good.

Whereas I, and nearly every review I've read would say the new Impact VXi is the best flat shoe made, by a long way.

It's a lot stiffer soled than the Freerider, and the old Impact which was still quite soft, and felt like it was about an inch thick, with an orthopaedic sole.

my sam hills are lighter, comfier, as grippy and i can feel the pedals like them.
owned 2 pairs of impacts in the past, they were non of the above except grippy,

If you're not bothered about the feel then they'd be great- like I say, not everyone will care about that, I'm not the only person that does though and if you do, they're not nice at all. If I could get the new Impact uppers and construction with an old Freerider or Impact sole on it I'd be well happy.

??? The Elements are the 'winterised' versions! Fairly water resistant, no mesh, fabric or vent holes in the uppers, quicker drying than the flat shoes I've owned before (AM40s, Teva Links).

I do a lot of pushing up muddy hills and although they're not as good as spiked/studded shoes would be I'm not sure they're massively worse than any flat shoes as they all have minimal tread.

Despite what they are Marketed as....they are lighter than impacts and less padded.

So, whilst perhaps not for you, for me...my summer option.

😀 😉

Not too concerned about the overall feel, but I'm really looking for a super grippy flat pedal shoe, plus, I've used shimano for the past 4 years so I just fancy a change.

The new Impact Vxi's are more water resistant than the old ones and dry out a lot quicker. Specialized 2FO's are worth a look as well.

I do like the 2FO but CRC don't do them, do they?

I'm fortunate that my circulation appears to be fairly nuclear compared to many people - on the bike, even once it's snowing, my extremities haven't needed more than windproof cool weather gloves and ski socks with the 5.10s. I'm the opposite when asleep though, a 4 season down bag suits me in the spring!

The freeride elements vxi only lasted me 6 months before the sole wore through. Gone back to the non vxi freeride elements which last longer but the blue version looks like something Elvis would wear.
