we were near the top of Staples Lane

First road race I've been to, it was a great event. Loads of people, old and young, turning up on bikes and just stopping when they've found a spot. This country lane I often ride is buzzing with excitement, the police motorbikes ahead of the riders, helicopters then there are the riders passing one yard in front of you.

It was a great advert for cycling, a wonderful atmosphere. The police bikes were high giving the crowd and acting as cheer leaders.

A sense of the speed which for a me was one of the most incredible things, this section was slightly uphill after the main box hill climb
