I'm thinking about getting some to replace my toras, but I'm a bit put off by their flexiness (according to the reviews), and the mainenance involved - I saw a post saying you have to change the oil every 25 hours. Is this true?

So basically, are they useable for regular riding or just 'one-race-wonders'?

I do mostly XC, but occasionally go to CYB or afan.

Stick to Reba's in my opinion. More rigid with 32mm stanchions, better seals, less maintenance and more reliable.

Old SIDs were replaced by the Reba for all the obvious reasons as stated in your original post.

Can also be picked up quite cheap on classifieds if patient.

If weight is not an issue, Zocchi marathons would be another choice. Reliable as.............

I have a pair of 2002 SIDS, weigh 14 stone and find them fine.
I had them appart once, 4 years ago and the oil was like new, so havn't bothered since. They also hold their pressure for over a year at a time!
I am fastitious about lubing the stantions and cleaning around the seals though. I believe that if you stop crap from getting in then there is little to worry about inside.

Yes you can see a little flex under braking, but it is nothing to be put off by. Compared with Toras you will see a huge difference in weight and performance.

I don't need superlight forks, however it's the main reason I don't like the toras (2.4kg!), so I'm trying to get something under about 1.8kg, preferably cheaply (so old is fine as long as they work). What else can anyone recommend?

Thanks for your replies. I think I will save up some more money and get some rebas (or similar) though. They're more expensive, but probably a safer bet in the long run (less mainentance, and I can probably get them new with warranty for £250).

Chrisd - If you change your mind, I have some SID carbon's going spare, they have the real 'pro only' blackbox dampers and have been double bushed to take out some of the flex. These are my ex-team forks which have lived on my singlespeed for the last few years. There is some 'lightning' on the stantions, but they have never leaked any oil, ever, and so I am happy that it is purely cosmetic!

If you are interested email me: jrb4 at hotmail dot co dot uk

Cheers, Jon

I used a set of SID World Cups for years (the silver ones with carbon crown and steerer) and while they were a tad flexy when pushed hard I'm only 70kg and fairly smooth so they did me fine - got me onto several race podiums and put up with my cack-handed descending in the Peaks and Lakes. Ultra reliable, I had them serviced once every year or so (definitely not every 25hrs!) by the ever-excellent TF Tuned Shox, never any signs of damage.

I sold mine last year but there's still sets turn up on here or eBay.

Yep, I had some of the old WCs for several years and they never missed a beat.

Then had some Reba WCs, and they were stiffer, but a fair bit heavier. Do On-One still have Reba WCs dirt cheap? That'd be worth a look!

As most people seem to be saying, they are good forks. I never noticed any flex really, but then i do only weigh 70 kilo's... They arent really forks for aggressive riding, they can take a bit of abuse, but definitely prefer to be ridden smoothly. Mine were sid teams.

Got a pair of 2001 SID SLs. They were fine with V brakes but do flex quite a bit under heavy braking with a disc. They have never leaked oil or air, the stanchions are as new (fastidious about cleaning) but the rebound damping adjuster has broken so they are now out of commission until TFT work their magic. The same bike now has Reba SLa, which track better and are noticeably stiffer under braking. Unless you are a weight weenie, I'd go with the Rebas.
