SInce the dawn of time (well the last 40 years or so) have all bike chains been the same 1 inch spacing?
I've bought a 'vintage' chain ring and cranks from ebay for a bike themed project (I don't need to ride it) I've tried to put a modern day MTB chain around it and the teeth spacing doesn't seem right to fit the chain.
Did they have different chains back in the day?

Shimano did a 10mm pitch Dura Ace in the late 70's. There was inch pitch back in the day too.

Its not the thickness its the spacing between the teeth / chain rollers.
Apart from inch-pitch, half-inch chains have been the norm since the 1920s with the exceptions of the 10mm Shimano DuraAce from the 1970s. The width of the chain has got progressively thinner as the number of cogs increased - from 1/8" we went to 3/32" and then along came 8 speed and they've got progressively narrower.

Is it way, way out, or is it just really badly worn?
I've recently put an 8 speed chain on my 3/32 fixie. So far no problems.
