Yes, should have said - for bombing about town, some commuting etc. Just seen Edin. Bike Coop have a Specialized Langster Steel for £400 which looks good. Are they swappable between fixed gear and freewheel?

check the rear wheel spec. if it's a "flip-flop" hub, then its easy to just flip the wheel over between free and fixed. As long as you arent more than say, 2 teeth different, the trackend should take up the difference.

Anything specced as fixed, should be able to take a freewheel screwed on the hub instead.

Cool, the Langster I'm looking at doesn't have a 'flip-flop' hub, the 2011 model does but is more expensive. Would like to try a fixed gear, think a bit of practice would be in order before I try in the city though

I have a charge plug freestyler. I believe they are around 350. I blummin love mine. I use it for 13 mile commute on road and graveltrack. I have mine set up SS as I decided my knees were knackered enough and I also have a big downhill on the way to work which I totally spin out on (42-16t)
I have bullhorn bars fitted. I found the narrow risers just too stumpy for the commute.
It excels around town, a real solid no nonsense ride, fast rolling but still capable of bunny hopping up curbs etc.
An off the peg SS isn't so 'cool' as building up your own but charge are a wicked brand. I also have a blender.....
Excellent bike, much fun....
