So thinking about swapping my shock on my Hammerhead Thumper (remember those!)….supposedly 130 travel.
Currently running offset bushings 190x51 shock (stock is 190x51 IIRC). Flipped it upside down, measured rear axle to ground at shock full extension, then again at full (air out) compression. Only measures 100mm difference….therefore does that imply 100mm rear travel?
Planning on using offset bushings 200x57.
Is my measuring at fault or something awry with travel?
Banter and pointing out the obvious very welcome.
Chris
First, I'm not sure that the Hammerhead Thumper is 130mm travel, a bit of googling suggests 120mm?
Second, many manufacturers are a bit fast and loose with their travel measurements. If the rear wheel travels in a 120mm arc, but only moves 100mm vertically, quite often that'll be listed as 120mm travel in the specs.
Thanks @Kramer. I think Hammerhead Thumper was 130 but that vaguely rings a bell as a version may have been 120 also.
Cheeky about vertical travel vs arc travel....interesting
Mine does the same, 100 mm along the arc of the axle, (and that's rounded up significantly) and more like low 90's vertically.
Thanks @vert assume you’re not referring to a hammerhead though? Cheers
Also manufacturer rounding up can be 111-120 = 120, 121 - 130 = 130 etc.
Cheeky monkeys
If it was designed for a 51mm stroke shock and the shock is moving 51mm, it's getting full travel.
Cheers all
Thanks @vert assume you’re not referring to a hammerhead though? Cheers
Nope, but an almost identical suspension design.
Fitted the 200 x 57 with offset bushings and lo and behold 130mm vertical travel…. Not quite sure how that worked out but works for me 👍🏻
Nothing to add other than I had a Switchback Unveil9 which I think was the same frame, nice bike, did ~1000 miles on it
Ooh and due to the wonders of Google Photos, simply typing in "switchback" it has found my photos of it in my backups, here are a couple. Can't see shock dimensions but it does look quite long so perhaps more like 57 than 51
Not added a photo before using the new option, bit weird! Anyway..

Thanks @dlr. Agree that may well be 57mm stroke length there. Cool looking bike.
