saw an advert for this when I was away in Whitby at the weekend, Fylingdales to Scarborough down the coastal track. Challenge is under 6 hours, what’s it like. I fancy this as it fits with us visiting a freind over there later in the year.

When is it? Or is it just an "in your own time" thing? My experience of the moors is Its hugely weather dependent, the moorland peat is like a black sponge and even the proper tracks are sandy surfaced which somehow becomes gear destroying treacle yet with all the grip characteristics of diesel on polished glass in the wet.

In the dry it'll be great.

I take it you're talking about a walk here, rather than a ride.

Six hours sounds plenty if you're just heading for the cinder track, and then heading south on it. It's easy walking on a flat surface all the way.

Nope it’s a ride, 7th annual north York’s moors cycle challenge. 30th September.

It can't take a very direct route then; it's only 18 miles from Whitby to Scarborough and the cindertrack is former railway; so flat and smooth ...

If it's using the Cinder Track and it's a 'race/timed challenge', it's going to be deeply unpopular, particularly with certain members of the population of Robin Hood's Bay.

It's not quite flat and smooth, there's a bit of climb between RHB and Ravenscar. But the Cinder Track is a bit political...

Bit of a thread hijack - is it bad form to ride the cinder track? We (two of us) are riding Ravenglass - Ravenscar end of August, and were planning on riding the track (probably very, very steadily) to Scarborough to get the train home.

Riding it is absolutely fine, flyingmonkeycorps. There's a bunch of locals very up in arms about organised events being run on it though, even with the requisite permissions (National Parks etc)..

On the poster it says it’s 38 miles so maybe there’s a course set out?
