My LH XT arm came loose yesterday, god knows how but the plastic side jobbie was missing. I've read up loads on t'interweb 'bout it.
Had to ride home on the arm and it is totally mullered. My eyesight isn't good enough to see if the splines are damaged on axle, although I am suspicious.
What is your own experience of XT cranks - does it **** the splines?
Please actual experience only, I can make my own suppositions.
And anyone got a spare LH M770 175 arm?
The "plastic side jobbie" is just there to preload the bearings - the crank shouldn't fall off if this is missing, it's held on with the two screws through the end of the crank arm itself.
I can't see the splines on the axle being mullered - it's hardened steel. More likely the splines on the arm will be fubared.
Ebay an option?
The 2 pinch bolts won't have been done up tight eneough. Had the same happen to me on the road bike. I ended up swapping the [s]bolts[/s] shimano piece of cheese shite with some stainless ones from work.
Had this once on some Saint cranks - luckily it dropped off whilst doing some loops on the driveway.....still a bit disconcerting though!
I'm no expert and obviously didn't really ride any distance on it but I don't see why it should wreck the splines - unlike the old Square BB's the axle isn't tapered so it shouldn't really have any affect so long as the spline engagement remained good enough not to allow the crank to spin off - thereby damaging the last short section.....
Oli.
Got a feeling it caused by wear / not installing that little plastic flick-over lock thing that grips the pinch bolts.....
