On Saturday I was out riding with my winky lights and, for no reason, decided to ride down the big concrete staircase in the woods that I always walk down.
So it's dark, the steps are half covered in ice and snow... I wonder if its because I could not see the drop on the right-hand side that suddenly felt braver.
Facing it in daylight I will probably cack mesself!
it does not hurt too much falling on snow, i have found this out quite a bit in the last week or so.
braver tho, i think not, well not me.
I quite often ride parts of trails at night that I dont during the day, not being able to see can be a great help sometimes- unless you fall off of course....
I'll tell you once my shoulder stops hurting :/
We all ride differently at night. I once went down Jacobs Ladder one dark December night (not this last December BTW) without problems, then totally wiped out on the flat farm track back to Edale.
No wonder folk are afraid to go out at night nowadays what with the chances of coming across you and your peculiar method of light mounting!
peculiar method of light mounting!
LMAO ๐
I was out this evening over the fields at the back of my property.
No lights. No need, it's too distracting in this weather in these conditions when you know the route so well.
In truth, my bar-mounted lights are about the same length as my wanger, but quite a bit slimmer. They do droop if subjected to lots of banging up and down!
I'm definitely braver. I figure that what I can't see won't hurt me.
You only see one line when night riding and are more focused on it,rather than daylight were there might be 3 or 4 lines to confuss you.
I ride much better at night as I can't see the scary bits on the track. Much less random braking!
last year i was living on the edge of the alps.
we used to ride every thursday night. rode one trail and liked it so much i thought i'd ride it on the following saturday.
i nearly shit myself when i saw the trail in daylight.... over one hundred metre drop off to the left. there were guys absailing down it.
so, braver; no. ignorant; yes.
I once went out on a ride twice, once at 12 midnight, completely wasted after half a bottle of vodka, then again at 11am the next morning. Apparently in the night I happily rode down the big drops, off the set of 1.5 foot high steps etc. In the day, I gingerly stepped down them.
Although I did get more mysterious bramble scratches on my face on the evening ride than I did on the daytime ride, so I wouldn't necessarily recommend it!

Buzz,
That trail round from hanging rock clinging to the top of Burrington Combe holds the same for me ...
Dave
i am much braver at night ive been back to trails before and had to walk or think twice about that i just rode in the dark. there is a bit on my local ride i always have to think twice about as its so dodgy (and one of the lads broke both arms there which didnt help lol) but did it at night and went straight thru no problems
i just wish i could turn the lights off in my head in the daytime ๐
Nope, I am definately far more timid riding at night, just not as confident, my riding mate is the total opposite though he rides with loads of confidence at night, and takes way more risks, (mind you he is as daft as a brush ๐
Yep, I seem to ride a whole lot better in the Dark for some reason. There is a reasonably techy descent on one of our regular rides which, for some reason unknown to me, I fly down in the night. Either that or it just feels quicker in the dark.
It's the same for me. Riding at night seems to take away some of my fear. Seeing some of the stuff again in the daylight makes the safety valve in the brain go into overdrive.
"trail round from hanging rock clinging to the top of Burrington Combe"
That's a good one. That awkward step where you look left down onto the car park 100ft below I have yet to brave. Went round it with chipps, elliptic, candodave, clink et all just before xmas. It dint help there was an ambulance in the car park. I'll manage it one day.
The concrete staircase I refer to is in Tor Woods in Wells.
yep, done those the other day Buzzz, like you said best done in the dark!
Go with the flow - what you cant see cant kill you.
Far too many people let their heads mess with their ability (mee for one)
Doing jumps at night is a laugh. You can see a lip, and then blackness. You really have to know what's on the other side ๐
