Wow. What a blast. I rode until my helmet mounted light died, then headed back to the car using the bar mounted light which had also dropped into the red-zone. Bike was on red by then too. Squeaky bum time...

I'll carry a spare light battery next time.

Blah blah cheating
Blah blah trail damage
Blah blah earn descents
Blah blah get us all banned from trails
Blah blah pass me on climbs and I’ll put my elbows out
Blah blah fat, lazy

Hope that covers it?

Yep. Been nightbiking for years on many types of bike, but tonight was hands-down the most fun. Arrived home buzzing and soaked with sweat. Can't wait to go again.

I'll ride acoustic with my friends, but if I'm solo, from now on it will be eBike all the way. It seems I can run bar mounted light direct from the Brose motor with wee Lupine lead. I'll look into that.

For years I’ve done more of my riding in the dark than the light, mostly in a regular but ever-changing group but also going solo on the way there and back and extending the ride beforehand if I get out of the house early enough.

Anyway, I went electrified last week, so I’m two E night rides in. Well, **** me if it isn’t even more awesome! I turbo there and once I’m with the group I turn off the power most of the time and just enjoy riding a thundering brute of a big slack 150mm travel 29er. When my legs or lungs need a break because I’m hauling that extra weight up the climbs then I turn on eco mode. Now and then I crank up the power for silly fun. And when it’s over I get home so fast!

Or can we just... not, maybe ?

Nightie biking, bit cold in this weather surely. Think I'd rather wear a few more layers.

Good job you got home before your bike's battery ran out otherwise you would have been stuck out there all night.

Shame there's no charging socket that would let you run a light off the bike battery. And a pair of heated bib shorts. And perhaps a mini espresso machine and toaster.

I’m with you OP! Not touched my ebike since May until this last 2 weeks. Not sure why it is more fun when it’s cold and dark but it is!!

No-one can see how ugly your bike is? (I'm jokin!) 😀 I wanna night-e-bike!

BTW - there is a new mag - https://hi-torque.com/product/electric-bike-action-holiday/
Hopefully it'll start a new forum... 😉

One thing I’ve always liked about our group rides is we’ve had people turn up on literally every sort of off-road bicycle bar downhill bikes (well, I can’t remember a DH bike turning up!) and they’re always accepted, as long as they don’t behave like a dick and aren’t out of their depth to the point of being dangerous. Every wheel and tyre size, every variety of suspension, frame material, gears or not, handlebar shapes, geometry, motors, pedal types, whatever.

It’s like the complete opposite of a STW thread...

Mark has ridden his antique Kona Stinky with triple clamps and 50t front chainring at least once on a Thursday.

Same here Chief. Years back a group of us rode at Glentress and everyone got their ass handed to them on every climb by a guy in the group riding a 50lb Trek Deisel DH bike with supertacky DH tyres, 11-25 cassette and 42T chainring. Fit AF and basically couldn't have climbed slowly.
I often ride what folk on here would consider entirely inappropriate bikes/tyres on terrain they're not really suited to. It can be a lot of fun.

Nice try. But a stinky was just a shit bike not a DH bike. 😉

E-bikes are ace for night riding! Especially in winter as they take a lot of the slog out of wet conditions.

I even bought a L&M Seca 1800 light to wire into my motor to run off the main battery on my Focus, sadly it needs a Bosch motor so it's *AHEM* for sale in the classifieds if anyone's interested.

I've finally sorted all my problems with my ebike that sat around for a year. That includes a brand new replacement motor. Swore all the time it was in the shop that it was getting sold with the brand new motor as a big selling point but threads like this are making me have massive second thoughts!

Mine? Cube Stereo 140mm FS with Bosch, motor was 6 months out of warranty but replaced FOC once they'd had a look at the usage reports 🙂

Yes it's certainly fun in the dark. Mine dumped me in a load of leaves the other night when the back end decided it wanted to be in front.

Calm down Neal, it was an innocent comment. Wasn't aware I was being a dick, why be so defensive all the time with the name calling etc?

EDIT: No,I take that back Neal. I don't think I'm being a dick still but I think it's ME being all defensive, not you.

Not had a great day here but should know better.

This forum is actually my happy place!👍

I've only had a brief demo loop on an e-bike in horrible conditions where I would have been off and pushing my bike uphill through the slop. It was hilarious how easy it was to keep moving uphill in porridge.

One of the things I came away thinking was how amazing night rides would be.

I'd love to take one around Hamsterley or Glentress in complete darkness.

Fair enough, not intended as name calling.
Play on the “pick a side, be a dick about it” meme.

However, being the first poster on a thread clearly about ebikes, desperate to disagree and talk about non ebikes...... possibly fits the bill (a bit?)

I went again last night. Perfect frosty conditions. Night biking normally feels fast, but uphill on twisty rooty singletrack, the overall experience with the motor assist can be a bit bonkers, requiring full focus and all "twitch" skills to be deployed.

I don't know what support the motor was providing, as I was experimenting with the Smart Control function where one tells the bike how far you want to ride and the electronics manage the support level. It felt like a lot, but the App says it was average 38%. I'm not fully sold on Smart Control.

I'm riding a Specialized Levo, and the one thing that is abundantly clear is that it is not at all suitable for beginners. It requires a correspondingly greater upper body input to cope with the extra mass. If you were not a confident/competent rider, it could scare you witless.

perhaps a mini espresso machine and toaster.

could have done with that at Glentress this morning, -6 with the windchill at the high exposed points. glad to be back in the warm now. my ebike riding mate was frozen as "I'm not sweating enough on the climbs to create my own heat" i however was a sweaty mess and that soon got cold on the descents

I wonder if you could run heated grips off the battery? I’ve heard you can use lights from a Bosch?
I have them on my enduro bike, think they use around 24watts at 12v

As I intimated in my second post, there is a lead available for the Brose 1.3 motor that will supply 6V DC at up to 2.4A, which is intended to power lights. This could maybe be used for heated grips, but on a Specialized, due to the power limit, it looks like you'd have to decide which hand you wanted to be warm.

I started off last night with very cold outer fingers and ears, but I soon warmed up.

My lights run from the battery and are controlled by the Bosch controller/screen.
So there’s no reason why you couldn’t. If he power was suitable and the connectors fitted.

Cheers Neal. I’ve looked at the Bosch lead and it’s a similar current rating so might not cut it for heated grips.

Like I said not my most considered post ever but we possibly still slightly disagree about the definition of a dick.

Anyway, its all good.👍

Tell your mate to switch it off. I rode GT on Friday on mine with a mate on a normal mtb so kept mine switched off the whole way round. body temp was about right in riding trousers, L/S Base layer, Gillet and no gloves and helmet off for all the climbs (otherwise I'd have been too hot).
I ride it switched off quite a lot. Especially at the start of a ride where you just can't warm up otherwise.
I find getting clothing warmth level right on an Ebike quite tricky. on a normal bike I almost never wear long sleeves and pretty much never ever wear gloves but on the Ebike I've started wearing a little more. Too much and it's horrendously hot on the descents.

Is there any snow at GT yet? I'm dying to use the Eeb in snow.

he'd love to but health issues mean he wouldn't be able to ride more than 5 miles & it'd take a week for him to recover. ebike has saved him from hanging up his wheels for good. if he was healthy he wouldn't even entertain the option of an assisted mtb

Sorry dude. I just meant switch it off temporarily to build enough of an effort to stay warm when he rides with you. (or other non assisted folk). Another one of the beauties of having assist is the choice of how much, when or when not to use it.

You'd kinda hope no one would be dumb enough to want to do that at Glentress.

But y'know... One man's 6min40s run down Spooky woods is another's 4min11s down a soaking 2007 Champery WC track
