Have bought a 2008 Epic with the Spesh shock (claimed new by org' owner, Jan 2010). I understand there have been many issues with the shock, which as I understand are now resolved (?) via a 'yellow spot' shock mod
1, How would I know if the shock on mine has the mod - is there something obvious that tells me? (I've looked for the obvious, there is nothing on the shock)
2, How can I tell if my shock is goosed - for example it doesn't lock when I stand aside the bike and press down on the saddle as per this video - Does this indicate trouble - I'm thinking yes, but would like confirmation before sending the shock for the mod

thx

Not sure about Q1.
Q2 - does that shock have some kind of threshold setting? Spesh call it 'brain fade' these days. If it's not set to the extreme position, then the shock will have some give in it, I believe.

I'm only going on my Stumpjumper fsr, but if i press down on the saddle when the brain fade is set to it's strongest position, then the shock moves a couple of mm or so. If I twiddle the adjuster just a few clicks, the shock will move quite extensively.

When the shock is set to the stongest position it's rock solid, just a few clicks from this setting and then there is give pressing the saddle..the more clicks the more active the shock
This contridicts the video, but maybe thats wrong, or I'm misunderstanding it?

@nsaints - i've got the later design epic with the brain shock. do you have two adjustments on the system - on mine there is a knob on the remote reservoir and a thumb screw adjuster on the body of the shock. i found with mine that it was very sensitive to the slightest of changes in air pressure preload and even though my shock was replaced on warramty recently it does need topping up occasionally. for the mod question you could call specialized in chessington as they have some very helpful staff that you can talk to on the phone - let me know if you need the number...

yep - that's the right number choose the suspension option on the automated system. I spoke to a couple of different guys there in the summer this year and they coudn't have been more helpful.

not sure how many different permutaions of setting that there are but change things one at a time, i started setting the sag and then just fiddled and fiddled and fiddled some more with the compression speed and rebound damping settings. re the original question the shock should react in the way shown in the video but the way it reacts particularly in reducing pedal bob is dependant on the compression speed setting on the body of the shock...

Right, so they were very helpful - thx Matt
Q1 - behviour of my suspension is correct
Q2 - yellow dot by air port - which mine has (so much for me searching earlier :-S)
later shocks with '/U' added at the end of the serial # has modified seal already

Service is £95 backed up with 1 year warranty (not relevant to the orginal question, but maybe of interest to other people reading)
