The hubs on my current wheels are shot, so looking at a new set next month. I'm quite light (12st) and ride mostly xc, so nothing too demanding. My current wheels are 717 rims on xt hubs (m775). Would prefer some better hubs for the new ones, and have seen these on offer at superstar. Would go for the black crests with black evo hubs. I still use tubes, but would like the option of going tubeless in the future so they score a point there, plus will weigh tless than my current set. Before i click buy, has anyone got any other suggestions for the same price? A nice, light set is what I'm after.
Cheers in advance!
Have a look to see what the same rim would be on a pro 2 first. Have you tried servicing the xts?
I've got those and for the price they are amazing so far.
Did you happen to weigh them Jim?
Given Pooperstar's reputation (I've owned none of their products) I'd avoid the hubs unless they are proven and/or have good spares availability.
As above what's shot with your wheels?
I weighed mine on Friday, 760 front, 860 rear inc yellow tape and valves. They did need a tweak with the spoke key as they were a little out of true out of the box, but easily sorted. Took them for a spin today once I got some standard Nobby Nics to seat and seal tubelessly (NB, UST versions repeatedly blew off the rims at 20PSI), and so far so good, light, stiff and responsive. Though I haven't checked the wheel build since I washed it, but it felt grand.
The rear hub keeps coming loose after a few rides, allowing the wheel to wobble, which is a pain to keep sorting out. If i pinch it too tight, then the wheel siezes. There's probs an easy fix for it, that i don't know about.
If you were willing to spend 300 then ae7 bikes were selling American classic all mountain sets but they are out of stock. might be worth trying them if you are able to wait?

tom- sounds like one of the cones is loose might need to take the axle out and tighten it with a vice or two cone scanners. tightening one side as you are doing will never fix it and you will end up either overtightening and blow the bearings or leaving loose and causing more damage. take it to your lbs its maybe a 10 minute job to figure out if that is the problem. Could be other things but start with that assuming it comes apart like a shimano hub?
DS - Here's the exploded diagram I've taken it all apart and greased the bearings, but that's about as far as my knowledge goes for wheels. I'm assuming there's something on the hub axle that can be tightened?
Have you seen the new ones from On One? Might be worth a look, depending on the type of riding you're doing. I'd also recommend a custom build on Pro 2's from LifeCycles - faultless builds in my experience and quite competitive on price.
Tom, it can only be the lock nut and cone on one side or the other. Fully tighten the right hand cone and lock nut, then assemble the axle through the hub. Overtighten the LH cone (so bearings bind a little), tighten the lock nut, but not fully, then back the cone off. May need to play about to get it right. The XT hub on my CX bike does the same - which reminds me why I've bought Hope hubs for years. I'm tempted by the 29er version of the wheels you're looking at.
All you need to know you should find on these 2 pages about adjusting cones:
http://www.sheldonbrown.com/cone-adjustment.html
http://www.bikemagic.com/maintenance/adjust-your-cones/3318.html
They say it better than I can but basically you need 2 very narrow spanners and turn against each other to prevent them working loose as you are experiencing. There should be a cup and cone set on each side try adjusting the one that keeps coming loose first but you may have to adjust the other one aswell. Slightly trial and error too make it perfect- we are talking fractions of a turn. Can get fiddly but such a common problem on these hubs you will be happy to figure it out!
Let me know how you get on!

Sounds like the freehub bolt is loose, as you say, an easy fix, 10mm AK for most, something different for newer hubs.
I have XT & Pro2 hubs on my wheels. Just got a Surly hub on my SS wheel...very nice. Will be looking at them when I'm buying new wheels. Very nice.
I weighed them on crappy kitchen scales and they came to 1570, but someone else on here used better scales and theirs came to 1560 iirc.
My build wasn't perfect, there were slight wibbles but easily fixed. I have had no problems with Superstar stuff, have a 3 year old isis BB from them that is still butter smooth and had no probs with their brake pads. The hubs aren't made by them anyway, they are made by Novatec who make hubs for loads of brands, they seems grand so far. There are a small but vocal anti-superstar minority here, the only problem I've had was the stan's tubeless kit missing from the box, emailed and phoned but didn't get a reply but a couple of days later it turned up in the post - would rather they would answer emails but not a biggy, I'll keep buying stuff from them.
Thanks all for the links/advice. I'll try and sort it in the next few days.
superstar hubs are crap, bearings fail after a few months, seem great to begin though! I've had hope xc's for a while now and they've been faultless
Stripped/cleaned/rebuilt the back hub today. Took a bit of fiddling to get the non drive side cone spot on, but it's rolling really well. Did a 20mile ride on it, and seems to be ok at the end of it. Think I'll hold off on the new wheel purchase for a while, see if these last!
Cheers all for the advice/help.
Tom
