The Pack Rat....

Looks like 650b, Cantis and a bias toward front mounted luggage, very BQ/JH.
Nice to see something a bit different.

Assume the cantis are designed to appeal to those who prefer a less rigid front fork, but with the current CEN regs and the move to bigger tyres I'd be interested to see if there's much real world difference in feel.

I hope Surly pull through.
Dumping their long standing Far East agent was a stupid move, leading to poor availability of almost everything over the last couple of years.
Add in huge price hikes on the newer frames and complete bikes and I worry for their future.

Very much agree

I've been watching this with interest on mtbr, trying to block out the speculation and consequent disappointment that happens before its even been released! I'd be interested to see how much it actually sells for, though I'm sure it wont be cheap.
I gather there's a Midnight Special on the way too.

Sorry.

Always an interesting read, even if it's not really your kind of thing.

Shame about the lack of disc mounts - limiting the bike to 650b rules it out for me.

They already have the Cross Check and LHT for those not convinced by discs, wonder if those models will survive in their current form?

The amount of unquestioning fanboi frottage puts me off a bit tbh, but it's great as source of ideas.

Really fancy a 1*1 as my next MTB, rigid and with a hub gear.
Secondhand now, as they've dropped the frame as a new option.

Ahhhh, Fanboi Frottage.....I loved their first album "No, that's toothpaste", but they went downhill after Scott Chegs left.

He's with Evil Gazebo now isn't he?
I do like them, but they're no Pankhurst.

Nobody's Pankhurst, not even Nasty Gash, which, incidentally, is the name of the colour of the Pack Rat. Look how that turned out!

Full details released now - Linky.

[img] [/img]

26 inch wheeels on the smaller sizes (wahey!), 650 from 54cm up.

Geo looks quite 'sporty', over 3cm less stack and 2cm longer reach than the equivalent 50 cm Trucker.
I have the bars below the saddle on my DT, but still have a huge stack of spacers. Be interesting to see how this pans out in real world fit and feel.

I really like the look of this tbh - be interesting to see how they price the frame only option.

Are there a lot of touring tyres coming out in 650b then? All my faves weren't available last time I looked..

I honestly haven't looked.
I'm a short arse so on 26 with my Disk Trucker, would be the same with the Pack Rat.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a 650b bike, hence my comments earlier in the thread, but I can see where Surly are coming from with this.
