Surly version of a hardcore hardtail, widely announced but can’t see anything on this site, so for those interested:

The dropout configuration to run SS looks interesting!

Does look good. Properly compact frame and ability to run very long dropper appeals. Full build looks awful as per normal for surly but frame only you could build something very nice.

Other than the short rear end, it’s very close to the 2019 Saracen Zenith LSL in geometry and silhouette.

That’s a fun bike, so this should be too.

Looks nice, in a typical Surly, does absolutely everything right except the price kind of way.

It's not a million miles off the On-One Huntsman?  Steel singlespeed, same HA, similar reach, better standover, shorter CS.  The trouble there is that On-One presumably didn't sell enough of them to justify another batch, and it was 1/[insert number between 2 and 4 depending on the phase of the moon and Planet-X stock levels] of the price.

It's a shame that by the time Surly frames and bikes arrive in the UK they become so relatively expensive that they lose most of their appeal, to me at least.

The brand seems to be about being the underdog and making decent functional offroad bikes at a good price without too many bells and whistles which is great, until it arrives in the UK and it's £1050 for a Taiwan-produced 4130 hardtail frame which means it would have to be bl**dy amazing to be 'worth it'. Luckily for them, a lot of bike purchases are entirely subjective though so I'm sure it'll sell in OK numbers and it does look cool.

That reminded me, the Pace 629 is even closer than the Huntsman, available now, made from 853 and £300 cheaper than the Surly.

I can't help but think the Surly is somehow ending up at completely the wrong price point even if no one in the supply chain is driving Ferrari's to SSUK.

i like Surly, but as above the cost seems too high now against competition. My cross check frame was £314 in 2010. Similar frame now is around £900. My Inbred frame was £145 a year or so around that time, and a Scandal frame can be had for £299, although a steel frame from them is £650 so maybe similar levels of inflation.

Looks nice but +1 on the Surly Tax. $3299 for DB6s and a Psylo? $1400 for a heavy 4130 frame? I am sure it's well made, and the dropout is cool (if fiddly - lots of parts to move over to go from UDH to ss), but that's a _lot_ of money compared to not only cheap PX stuff but also similar bikes from Cotic/Pace/Stanton, as well as things like Esker in the US. Impressive seatpost insertion tho.
